Paris, "Ang. 4.~The pathetic end of a poor old Irishman who kept body and sol together by the coppers flung to him for grinding an organ has just bedn recorded. Patrick Nickleby was sixty-nine years of age, and was born in Kerry, * He had an adventurous career. He sought ivory in the In- dies, but failed to find any. Then he went to the Transvaal in search of old, and finally reached Paris. Here sank into a condition of abject poverty. He lived in the suburbs and played his organ in the Second ward every day. A piece from the opera "Martha" and an old Irish air were the chief items on the organ cylinder. The old man found himself in a lit- tle cafe in the Boulevard de Bercy yesterday. ' A man in the company thought he would like to have a lit- tle fun at Patrick's expense. Knowing his great love for the "ould coun- thry," he solemnly informed Patrick that as the result of an earthquake Ireland had been swallowed up. The Irishman grew despondent. = "Sinos that has happened," he said with tears in his eyes, "there is nothing more for me in the world." Saluting the company politely, he loft the cafe and made his way to the Bec bridge. Redmond Cannot Find His Son-- Enquiries Made As to Whether It Was a Hoax or Not. The enclosed is a copy of a paper found by Augh MeCollough in the lake off Wellington this week : "Tell mother the boat upset and Wollic and I are lost.. B. Hanson, W. McLowell, Campbeéllford." Then on the back of the paper were the names of J. M. Redmond, 49 James street, Kingston; H. W. Couling, Kingston, and Wil- liam Lee, Kingsten. ; The Whig published the above ex- tract yesterday, and the news caused rreat anxiety to the Redmond family. The daughter met her father, Joseph Redmond, on his way from work with the paper. She was crying and said: "Mat, is drowned." Mr. Redmond read the paragraph, gulped a few mouthfuls and started - down town. He went to the Montreal Transporta- tion company's yard. to see if his son was there for Wednesday week he had left home, saying he was go- ing to Quebec on the tug Glide. The tug was in port, but the sixteen-year- old Jad was not on board, in fact had not heen on her, The ohief . of police was interviewed and the whole situation canvassed. The chief ro- garded the matter as a hoax, as it would be quite a trick for an expert to write a note while in the water. The thought was. that the paper was a piece, with the names of the King- ston lads on the back, but how the ¢heét turned up at Wellington the father docs not know. The lads Red mond and Couling were on the steay,- er North King and may have written their names on a sheet which after wards found its way to:the pockets of the Campbellford lads. The Whig was consulted but no further light could be imparted than that the news came to the paper from its. Wellington correspondent. En quiry was promised and Mr. Redmond went home greatly agitated and pos- gibly to find little rest until news of his son reached him. The Whigs correspondent at Wel- lington, was reached by telephone and he said that the paper enclosed in ay bottle, was picked up, on Tuesday; by Mr. MoCullough, on the beach. The paper was a ship from a passbook, and the writing was hurriedly done, The impressioyf there is that the King: ston hoy not concerned heyond the fact that the back of the paper had their games. The bottle had driit- ed in from Lake Ontario, No tidings have been received there of any boat being found wrecked along the shore. The Campbellford Herald was asked about the mattér and reported that, "no persons of the names of Haffwon and McLowell are known here." Tt is a hoax, so far as Campbellford per sons know. A Whig representative called on Wil- liam Lee, James street, a partner in the Bailey Broom company of this city, but he was unable fo sev much other than that he knew wothinge cof the matter and could not ynagine how his name came to be attached to the paper. In fact he believed it must he some other W. Lee than himself, As for Couling, he was supposed to he working on the steamer North King, but enquiry at the vessel this morning elicited the information that no such man was employed theron. A brother of Matthew Redmond learned last night that the voutn had gone on the SS, Rosenount. Tele grams were sent to find out if he was aboard her. Wellington Personals.
