"Well," replied the owner as he baited to the American banner, "that little flag has brought us this far and I guess it will take us the rest of the way." But it didn't for that night. The point was not debated, the party referring to their previous intentions of not going through the locks till morning. They went back down the stream a little way and dropped an- chor for the night, preferring that to remaining tied at the dock. In the morning they locked through and pro- ceeded unmolested. Nothing more was heard of the matter till some days later. "One morning a niember of the crew thought he would like some of the celebrated cheese of his native land. (he was a Canadian), and proceeded to buy some. Being of an enquiring frame of mind, he was at the same time devouring both cheese and the news items to be gleaned from the pa: per in which the eatable was wrap- ped. Suddenly his eye struck the big head lines denoting the flag incident to the yacht My Lady. He was so sur- prised that he showed me the paper, and that was our first intimation of the reports spread broadcast. To mv own knowledge the article was copi- ed in many of the papers of both countries." My Lady's owner did not hestitate to write telling the originator in question what he thought of him and remarked that it was rather hard to tell just what was the Canadian fla, it was so scarce, Besides in Quebec, he discovered that the French ensign was blown to the Sreezes. In conclu- sion, he said that when he did want to get a Canadian flag he had all kinds of trouble doing so. "Evenitual- ly, T got that cheap twenty-five cent one flying at the mast," concluded the Yankee yachtsman. ---- SUNDAY CHURCH SERVICES. What Will Be Doing In The Church To-Morrow. First of all, that the | city has two engines, deveted to the | supplying of the required power, and | light; that "the cars are getting their power from, the big engine, which is devoted exclusively to that purpose," and that "in view of this, it is doubtful if the other engime can be repaired for another year, and that it will take a whole month to do the work," which can "only be done late in September at the expense of good light," which proves--what? That one of the two engines is useless, be- ing out of repair, and that "Mr. Campbell is not decided whether the repairs will be gone on with this year or not," and that in the meantime the cars gust have, and are getting, { all the power they need from the larger and sound engine, to which its exclusive use is devoted, That being theccase, may I ask where the light which the citizens require comes from, or whence the power which supplies it emanates, the smaller engine being out of repair, and the larger one de- voted to the use and requirements of the railway? Were the latter to break . down where would 'we be? Would we not he without Jight . and without power for the cars also? What would that mean ? Would the city, which has bound itself, through its hasty folly, to supply the com- pany with what it needs, Hot obliged to make the required repairs at once, or get a new engine to supply the necessary power for the cars ? That the council | bound themselves to do, no matter whether the citizens get electric light or not. Now, have they not shown themselves to be a nice lot of noodles ? What do the majority guilty of it think of themselves? Do they not now see their folly ? Have they not proved themselves worthy to be left at home hereafter? We have heard a good deal, for some time past, that the railway company intended putting in a new boiler; and that the latest report was 'that the small electrical engine could not be run in the day- time, owing to the work of laying the foundation for the company's engine being in progress, which is now. said to be complete, and the engine run- ning, which sounds rather farcical, there being so little electric light used in the daytime. By the way, do the company really mean to get a new engine at all? And if so, why so, when they so well know that the city have to supply them with power any- way? Even if the company do get a new engine to supply power for their own purposes, why is it that the city pro perty should be required on which to place it, even if they pay rent there for? What is the city to do for re quired space to store and supply their gas for the use of the citizens, for that seams to be nearly all they now own, since the present council has been 80 generous with the present street railway company, and that the labor and expense past councils have been subjected to in securing all this valu- able plant goes for almost nothing.
