The elections will likely take place in No- vember, Smullen Acquitted. Fonda, N.Y., Sept. 6.--Daniel Smul- lon, who has been held here on a charge of murdering Peter Conrad on March 17th last, was, last night. ac quitted. Conrad and Smullen, who were neighbors, left Argusville to gether on March 17th, and Conrad's team later arrived home driverless Conrad's body was found the next dav in a shed a mile across the fields from Smullen's home. St. Petersburg, Sept. 6.--A dispatch from Tillis says : "The whole of the south-east Caucasus is now terrorized by Tartars. Refugees are pouring in here from Baku, Elizabethpol and Shusha. Details from Shusha show that several engagements were fought between Tartars and Armenians be: hind regular positions and that a considerable part of the town was soon in flames. According to an offi- cial estimate over 200 houses were de- stroyed." -- Rioters Fire Oil Works. Baku, Sept. 6.~Troops under the direction of the governor are acting with the utmost vigor, but they have not succeeded in restoring order, al- though there is rather less firing. Armed rioters attacked the oil works in the suburb of Balakhan and after a hot fight set fire to them. Tartar bands are scouring the country, mur- dering and pillaging. Fighting confinues between Armenians and Tartars and the troops at Baku, Cau- casia. Many of the oil fields are in flames. Re-enforcements have heen rent from Tiflis. The losses amount to millions of roubles. -- MOB CAUSES GIRL"S DEATH. ---- Child * Would Have Escaped But for Crowd's Zeal. New York, Sept. 6.--In attempting to inflict punishment on a motor- man, last night, an angry crowd in Clinton strect caused the death of a little girl. In a riot that followed several persons were badly hurt and police reserves had a hard fight to disperse the mob. The victim of the accident was Anna Sherinshock, two years old. With her father and another man she was being led across the street, when a crowded north-bound car rolled her under the fender. where she lay cry ing but apparently uninjured. Before the motorman could step from the platform and lift the fender the crowd made a rush for him and in the scramble he was foreed against the controller, tarning it around and patting a full current on. Instantly the car shot forward a distance of 200 feet, and the child's body was ground to pieces. The sight of the mangled body added fury to the mob, and the motorman was dragged from the car and nearly beaten to death. ------ A STEAMER SUNK In Montreal Harbor--No Lives Lost. Special to the Whig. Montreal, Sept. 6.--The steamer Ho sanne, under charter by the marine department, in connection with the river, was sunk as the result of a col lision, early this morning, nea: Longue Pointe, in the St, Lawrence, some miles below this city. The steam er Empire, was the other steamer con cerned in the accident. So far as known yet there was no loss of life. § -- DOCK LABORERS On Strike Have Returned to Work. . Special to the Whig. Montreal, Sept. 6.--Dominion Trans port and Shedden company dock lab- orers, who have been on strike for the past few days, returned to work this morning. There were about 400 in all, and of these about one hundred and fifty will be unable to get back to their places. -- Letter Carriers In Session.
