The fact that the hotel is close to the wat. er will not necessarily draw tourists, People will come here anyway, as long as thev can get first-class accom- modation. A KINGSTON MAN AMONG THE DROWNED, Toseo Carried & Crew of Nineteen Men and the Olive Jeanette Seven--The Crafts Carried Iron Ore. George Chown, a son of Mrs. Wil- liam Chown of Kingston, was drowned on 'Lake Superior, on Sunday last, during a temble gale. He was second engineer on the steamer losco. He was married to an Amherst Island lady. Frank J. Griffin, son of Capt. William Griffin, and Matthew Cummings, Os- w men, were also drowned. The Tosco and Jeannette, laden with iron ore, left Duluth, Thursday, bound for Lake Erie. They weye caught by the storm when hall way down Lake Superior and must have been driven back with the hope of finding shelter among the islands east of Keweenaw Peninsula. Both boats were appar- ently overcome by the gale long before they reached Huron Island. From the fact that . the schooner suceeded in getting within four miles of the land without the steamer being | in wight, it is believed that the loso foundered much earlier in the day. Not a single man escaped to tell the story: of the experience of the crews of the two boats and twenty-six names have been added to the death list caused by the gale. Both boats were owned by W. A. Hawgood /& Co., of Cleveland. The losco was insured for $5,000 and the OBve Jeannette for £10,000 through of Buffalo. The steamer was biilt in 1891 and the schooner in 1890, both by. F, W. Wheel- er, of Bay City, Mich. The Olive Jeannette has been fatal to the steamers which have towed her. Some five years ago the steamer L. R. Doty started out from. Chitago with her in tow, bound for Buffalo. The two boats were struck by a furious gale and separated. The schooner lived through the storm, but the Doty was never after heard of. There was never even any wreckage found. The schooner was then given to the loseo to tow, and now apparently the losco has gone the same way. A Monstrosity. At odd times suggestions have been made in the direction of utilization of the idle Martello towers in Kingston, but the delegates to General Synod at Quebwe, will carry home as probably the deepest critical impression of Que- bec the object presented by a former military tower on the historic Plains of Abraham. It is surmounted by ugly scaffolding supporting huge water-tank, a veritable mingling of the sublime and picturesque with the ugly and ridiculous. -- Summer Colds.
