His works are well known in this country and many: of them are among the finest treasures of American galleries DANCING AND DEVOTION One Calls the Art "'Praying With the Feet." New York, Sept. 14.--Fifty profes- sors of dancing, representatives from all over the Wnited States, of the American Society of Professors of Dancing, are busy. in the Hotel Ma- jestic, concocting terpichorean novel- tits for the coming season. Accord- ing to one of the professors, who quotes Schiller, danoing is a "pray- ing with the feet," ahd it is the pur pose of this society to make foot prayer orthodox. One of the greatest problems of this season is the paming of the new dances; whether, Tor in stance, the new gavotte shall be call ed the Roosevelt. Would it not be better, in view of the president's re cent activities in the peace negotia tions, to call it "Diplomacy ?"' This question has not yet been decided. Oskar Duenweg, of Terre Haute, has introduéed what he calls the Credo waltz. Some one criticized this name, and wondered if it would not be, ob jected to. "Oh, no;"" he said, "I think the name is a very good one. It means, '1 believe," and ¥ belicve in this waltz, the queen of the dance, as the very best. This waltz combines all the known waltz movements--backwards, forwards and sideways in a round dance. It. is not meant for bogin ners. It is a composition which stands to the ordinary waltz as a rhapsody of Lizst to a five-finger ex ercise on the piano," Mr. Duenweg has great ideas for the fature of dancing. It was never in tended, he said, to. be socially a time-killer, ,but. its study should be the means for aesthetic "development of the body. The sessions of the so ciety yesterday and to-day were oc cupied in rehearsing new figures for the cotillion. At the end of thg ses sion the judges will "determine on figures will Fe sprung on the public. It is predicted that the waltz will be revised , and made slower, and that it will be more popular than the two step. Among the new dances already presented 'are the Gavotto Motto, the Spirit of America, and the Novelte. The professors . arc very susceptible to social distinetion, and think that the merely so-called professors who run dancing halls on the Bowery, are not worthy of the name. A party of investigation visited ome of these hallg last night and were greatly shocked by the costumes. The men, said one of the professors, danced without their coats. This is not considered comme il faut in circles taught by the real * professors. Married In The West. A pretty wedding took place in Cal- gary N.W.T.," an September 6th, in Mary's cathedral, when Miss. Jose ine Darragh, daughter of John A. Darragh; formerly of Kingston, was united in marriage, by the Rev. Fath- er Le Marchand, to Reymon McKen- zie Smythe, son of Colone 8. W, Smythe, of Aldeburgh, Suffolk, Eng- land. The young hmde looked charm- ing. in a Cavs suit of navy blue broadeloth, with large hat to match. The young couple left for England on their honeymoon to visit the groom's parénts. From all parts the farmers complain of the rot, from the excessive rains, and in some cases, a blight early in the season killed the stalks. There is every prospect that prices for potatoes will be high. Cut off in the bloom of youth, sad indeed was the death, Tuesday morn ing, at an early hour, of Miss Jennie Allison, daughter of Mr. and Mrs, Harry J. Allison.
