Root might find important work for American diplomacy in bringing about closer relations be tween ourselves and the people of the great northern half of this continent. Theres are many reasons besides those expressed in dollars and cents why the ties hetween the United States and Canada ought to be close and sym pathetic. The most colossal blunder of American statesmanship was the failure of this country, years ago, to acquire the great empty territories Iving north of the international boun- dary line and the Great Lakes, and west of what used to be Canada. Thix vast region did not belong to Canada any more than it belonged to uk; and it coltld have been ae- quired from Groat Britain for a song when we were nagiring her about the Alabama claims, * 18 too late now to undo that mistake. Nothing could be further from the truth than the idea that Canada will hy some sort of inevitable drift come finally into union with the United States. The drift is all in the othér direction. Every year that passes more firmly crystallizes the independent position of the do- minion. There is only one possibl means by which the situation can be improved, and that is through the reversal of our tarifi policy and the adoption of the principle of recipro City, or, better soll, of commercial union, ---------------- And He Should Know. One after another bore witness to her many sterling qualities, and each spoke of some special kindness re- ceived, and assured her of a hearty welcome' whenever she again visited Camden East. The meeting closed with prayer and the benediction, af- ter which the good-hyes were spoken with many expressions of regret for her departure, The Sunday following, at the close of the review exercises, Donald Fee was presented with an elegant um- brella from his friends in the Sah bath school, as a souvenir of their pleasant associations.
