Chicago, Nov. 13.--A few words spoken atthe right moment by an actress who was in full possession of her wits stilled a panic at the Illinois theatre, Saturday, just when it had assumed alarming proportions. Scores of terrified women, sbme crying some screaming in terror 'and others mute with fright, were rushing for the ex- its when Migs Olga Nethersole went before .the curtain," with-a smiling as- surance-thit all-was well, and in less The third act of "The Labyrinth' was near its conclusion, and Miss Nethersole 'and Miss Dorothy Grim: stone held the stage. The clang of a fire engine gong suddenly sounded, and several women. started from their seats. A few moments passed, and the sound of another 'gong broke in with startling clearness, one of the theatre doors having been opened just as a hose cart was: clattering by in Jack- son boulevard, . Close on this came other pieces of fire apparatus with gongs ringing. The noises suddenly ceased, "when the © engines and hose carts turned north in Michigan ave- nue. The audience settled down to listen to the play, aud a few moments of stillness ensued! Then a woman's voice rang out shrill. from the balcony : "I know they have stopped here; | know it."" The whole audience turned as if thrilled 'by an electric shock, and a wave of fear spread to all parts oi the house. The woman sprang from her seat and dashed for the exit, Other women caught the contagion of tettor and followed her example. The few men in the audience, and a num- ber of women who were not alarmed, cried *Sit down," but their demands were not obeyed. Miss Nethetuole paused in her lines to make assuring gestures, but still. the frightened wo- men kept crowding toward the exits. Mise .Nethersole and Miss Grimstone continued their lines to the finish, a matter of a few moments, .the curtain was lowered, and then Miss Nether sole reappeared before the curtain with an uplifted hand. The rush for the ex- its halted. The women began to take their seats quietly, while the actress waited with a smile on her face that carried confidence, For. a few mo- ments she stood silent, and then she spoke : "Dear women; [| feel as though 1 want to shake hands with you. CAS Secretary Gives Interesting Ad- dress on Sir George Williams, Founder of the Association-- Mr. Lipscombe Speaks To- Night. Rev. D. Laing, of the First Baptist church, gave a migst interesting and. helpful talk at the men's meeting yes terday afternoon. As this inciting was the inception of the special week of meetings, his message was filled with appropriate suggestions to. Christian men, growing . out of the incident of the raising of Lazarus. The general secretary gave a brief memorial address on the law Sir George E. Williams. Sir George was born in 1821, in Somersetshire. Con- verted in Bridgewater, he went to London at the age of twenty years, and was engaged in the Hitchcock Drapury establishment, St. Paul's churchyard. In 1844, he, with eleven others; organized the Y.M.C.A. move- ment, which quickly spread over Eng- land, and in 1851, the first branch was started in' Montreal, and later in Boston. To-day, there arc over 3,700 associations in North Awerica, and 7,500 in the world. At the jubilee, in 1891, Queen Vietoria knighted George Williams, as .a philanthropist. The speaker saw Sir George at the C, I world's convention, held in London, in 1901. As Sir George bowed from the platform he received the Chatau qua salute, from ex enthusiastig body of 5,000 delegates, In the fulness of age, with a life crowned with honor, Sir George pass- ed away last Monday. will be interred in St. ral. Tonight, at cight o'clock, Rev. W. Hatt Lipscomb, curate of St. Paul's, will give a straight talk on an portant theme, which a large number of men should hear. The preparatory prayer-meeting at 7.30 o'clock, will be attended by all the directors of the association, AH interested men are cordially invited to join with them at this and the large meeting, His remains Paul's cathed im- NO FRESH DEVELOPMENTS From Scenc of the Bavarian. Quebee, Nov, 13.--There are no now developments from the scene of the wrecked Bavarian; 150 laboreis have been working almost continually day and night since the 4th inst, dis charging cargo. An interview with the diver, in charge ol the operations on the ship, gives most interesting de- tails, He states that he had examin ed all that portion of the ship to the Wrecked northward, and found that she had struck on the reef amidships. There were numerous large boulders lying all around, and there was ho possi bility whatever of placing the exact positions from the outside of the apertures causwl hy these boulders. This rock had evidently piorced the vessel immediately under the crigines, raising them nearly four feet, and completely raining the working of all the machinery, not only for opera ting the steamer, but of the dyna mos for the lighting, as well as all the heating apparatus. It was their intention to endeavor at- lower water. to construct an inner platform in the amidships hold, and try to resist the inrush of water, and also assist in raising the ship. It is stated that the forward and alt holds are comparatively free of water, the puwips being able to control any water coming in at these two points G. T. Davies & Sons, though erippled by the very heavy loss of their wreck ing "schooner, expect to 'put the steamer afloat in a comparatively short time.
