CAPTAIN'S MURDER. . ® Toronto Man Meets Death in the New Hebrides. Ottawa, Nov. 21.--The government have received from the colonial office an official account of the murder in the New. Hebrides of Captain Dick Pentecost of the trading cutter Pet: rel, whose father, R. J. Pentecost, lives in Toronto. The facts were ob- tained by Commander Lacey of his majesty"s ship Mutine from the com- mander of the French warship Meuithe who conducted an inquiry into the af- fair. Captain Pentecost is referred to in the description as a French sub ject, and this is probably how the French commander came to make the investigation. The facts ascertained by him are as follows: "The Petrel arrived at Bitarrara, an- anchorage three miles north of Norove Rovo, in Maeqo Island, on July 17th. On July 15th, recruiting was commenced, and two men and three women secured. On July 19th, a fourth woman came. to engage, and a discussion took place with the natives relative to her en- gaging. When the mate of the Petrel, Edward Watson, returned to the cut- ter to get' the payment for this wo- man, four natives came off under the pretext of engaging as sailors. The two whalers of the Petrel then return. ed to the beach, where the mate made the agreed payment to the woman. He also made the customary presents before leaving, but did not shove off, as a sixth woman said she wished to engage. At this moment the natives surrounded the two whalers and at tacked their crews, while the four na- tives who had asked to be taken on as sailors attacked Pentecost on board the Petrel and killed him. Four out of the seven of the whalers' crews were killed, the other three, one of whom was the mate Watson, escaped by swimming. The natives then went' off to the Petrol, threw Pentecost's body overboard, looted the cutter and ent the cable. On their return to the beach they shoved both whalers off and. let- them drift away. One of the crew succeeded in regaining the Petrel and took her to Aoha, The mmte and the other survivor were picked up by the schooner belonging to Mr. Watson of Malo. The result of inquiries from the natives of Narovo Rove proves that the deed was perpetrated by ra- tives from a group of villages known as Eanovdvo, eight kilometres from the beach at Bitarrara: The chief of this village is a man named Waro- vay, but he was absent on the day of the massacre. The affair was arranged by another chief, Vagou. The captain of the Meuithe was able to obtain the mames of some of the natives who took. a leading part in the massacre, also the ae of their villages. The case will be considered at the next meeting of the mixed commission, Sunlight roan is better than other soaps, bul iz best when used in the Sunlight way. Buy Sunlight Soap and follow directions. THROWING LICHT ON THE SUBJECT OF HOME DYEING. nN A STRANGE © AND GRUESOME DEVICE RESORTED TO, Court Offidials' Fooled--Body Was Securely Screwed Down and Removed Under Their Very Noses. London, Nov, A strange and some what gruesome dovice, by which a man named Baker, charged yesterday with fraud, succeeded in once evading arrest, and a second time in dodging a summons, was described at the West Ham police court. On one occasion, when "wanted" Baker was understood to be at an undertaker's shop at Manor Park, and the officers of the court went there to apprehend him. But he could not he found, though the place was thorough ly searched, On trestles in the shop was a coffin, in which the police were informed there lay a body. In their presence the cofin was screwed up and taken away to, as was intimated, a public mortuary, A day or so later it was discovered that the supposed dead man in the coffin was no other than Mr. Baker, . whose friends had collaborated with him in this way of evading arrest. On the second occasion a judgment summons was to be served: This time a woman at the house said: that Mr. Baker was very ill and could not be seen, . When the officers next called the blinds were all down, and they were told that the defendant had died that morning. Then a coffin and the "hody'" was again removed, After each of these adventures My, Baker started business in another part of London, He has now been sent for the charge of fraud. A Wood Bee.
