BOARD OF EDUCATION CON SIDERING PLAN. a 'Teachers' Institute or College in the City--Will Like- ly "Ask the Department For Its Co-Operation. _A proposition has béen afloat some time looking to the establishment in Kingston of a model school, teachers' eollege or - training institute, as it is severally called. The matter is now be- fore the Board of Education, and be- fore many weeks may take tangible For m, During the past few years the con- ction, has beer growing that the mo- del dg as now - constituted, are somewhat antiquated and not up to the requirements of the teaching pro- fession. Apd this is most manifest in Kingston, where advantages of a hich order could readily be made available. Queen's staff could easily be utilized in more thoroughly instructine teach- ers in pedagogy; thus qualifying them more adequately for the service they are expected to fulfil in such a progress give provinee as Ontario. Prof. Dyde, Prof. Kuight, Prof. Marshall, along with members of the Board of Fduca- tion, have been discussing and canvas- sing the situation for some vears. and had talked the matter over with the late minister of education, Hon. Rich ard Harcourt. The minister was impressed and in- timated that he was of opinion that fewer model schpols with longer terms, was desirable and he hoped for an early solution of the question. Mr. Pense, while in the house, felt impressed with the proposition, apd manifested a lively interest, hoping that details would be brought down which would make Kingston the een- tre of a flourishing . school. Thoueh a rhange of government came a year ago) the matter has not been lost sioht of by either the late member or the edu eationists of the city. Additional interest was given the matter by addresses at the recent banquet given by Ex-Chairman Me Kelvey, especially by Dr. RKuivht, whi developed the schemes as he deemed most desirable for' the advance ment of the teachers' profession. Then in his inaucural ad- dress at the Board of Education, em phasized the desirability of a school and the matter is now before the nfan- agement committee for a report, This will be made at an carly date. The board is desirous, however, of having a school of the type desired under its control, in affiliation with § Queen's just "as School of Mining is. The members who have looked into the proposition believe that the education department would second their desires in equipping a school with expert teach- ers, and it is hoped would appor tion all of Eastern Ontario as its field of operation, In such a school the non-profession- al teachers could be gathered and a term of seven to ten tlic created. With Queen's élasses available a course could be drafted that would so cap- ably equip teachers that their grasp of the requirements would cause a material advance in salaries and the much-needed and highly desired end secured, in having teachers who would make the profession their life work. Hitherto the drain from the teach- ing profession has been so great, and the constant coming in'of inexpori- enced teachers, has had a deterior ating effect upon the work and the schools have suffered most severely. The eduecationists concerned believe the new. scheme would happily im prove conditions and a higher stan- dard and hetter work would result, The matter has been discussed hy outside inspectors of Eastern Ontario and almost invariably they have sig- nified approval and encouragement: all were anxious that Queen's should aid in the work. Of course in the development of the plan Kingston. would have to do its share. The Board of Education is quite satisfied that if Kingston erected a suitable building, say on the pro- perty on Alired street, now held by the board, between the Collegiate Institute and Vietoria school, valu- able help would. be given by the edu- cation department. It might require 825,000 for a building, but it could also be used for school purposes hoth by the institute and the public schools. Several of the uptown schools. par tienlarly Louise and Rideau schools, are deteriorating so rapidly that something must be done, hence the conviction that a large new structure, as we have indicated, could be made available and would meet the demands for years-to come, There is every prospect that the board will be asked to send a deputa- | tion to "Toronto to consult the de. partment, and backed by the soon voice of Eastern Ontario those con- cerned fool they can make out a ied case. Anyway the proposition is like Iv to be brotight into the realm of practical exploitation and 'we are all lovers of the highest typo cation in the public their support to bri beneficial work. -------- Prominent Dairymen Here, Dahicl Derbyshire, Mp, Po Be 3 and TI, P Hrominent chrego men of Hamton. anfived in the city this morning and are at the Ifvquois hotel, hey JH, talks, this afternoon, to the now class in the long course, 7 at the Eas ern Dairy School, « Ens sure of edu schools will qive ng about such ---------------- A Pleasant Evening.
