There has always been mi regarding the eligi- bility of a player to take part in mutehes with other clubs and = then return to the college teams. To cover this poigt thoroughly, Bakes will bring forward an . amend- ment to the rules and regulations. At Jpresent the clause reads : "No play- or shall play for more than one club in the same year, except in case of a bonafide change of residence, ote." If the proposed revision is accented it will 'read : "No plaver shall play for more: than one, club in any leagne match in the same college vear, ox- cept, ete." Pick Mills will aldo move ie rons ion o HA h i i Ll i HA, with regard to ho from goal keepers. He will mave that the prosent offside rule be addid to so that it will reat: "A player should always be on his own side of the puck except when he takes a pase from or plays the puck as it bounds off his goalkeeper within a fpace of three feet owt from goal and extending to the side of the rink." Ross, Esq.; trustee Stanley cup, Dear sir,--On Yoiday night we finish: ed our schedule and by defeating Mc- Gill won the championship of the C. LHU. We wired J. ©, § herry, To- tonto, seeretary of C.1LH.U., to wire you a challenge on our behalf for the Stanley "cup. This vou will have, doubtless, already received. We would like to have our challenge uccepted and. game arranged for as carly a date as possible, As you ean readily understand onr men do not want to prolong the season longer than is necessary in view of the examinations which are even now looming up before us. Would you kindly let us know the earliest date on which you think this game could be played and also infor- mation re rules, officials, ete.-- Yours truly, Richard Mills, seerotary Queen's Hockey Club. Yesterday afternoon the following reply was received to the above com- mamication : Ottawa, Feh, 13th, 1906. Richard Mills, Esq. secretary Queen's Hockey Club, Kingston. : Dear Sir: I have your letter yester- day re the Stanley cup: The trustees have notified Mr, Sherry that your challenge has been accepted, As the series in which the Stanley cup hold- és are engaged does not end until March 10th, the trustees will have to consult them as to the tonditions un- der which your challenge shall be played, but we guarantees a match dur- ing either the last week in February or the first March. We will try and make the date as early. as possible and communicate again with you this week --Yours respectfully, P. 1), ROSS, As the game with the Ottawas for the Stanley cup is now practically as- sured, the secretary of the Queen's athletic committee, W. H. McInnes, is Making arrangements regarding an excursion to Ottawa. This move is most popular and a large number of enquiries ary being daily received from citizens anxious to accompany the team if the trip is taken. The students are also very anxious to run down ant see the game. In view of certain statements re. garding the Queen's challe nge for the Stanley cup, the following extracts from a letter from the" president of MeGill Hockey Club, might bear pub- lishing. He writes: "Since our game with you, 1 have been thinking of the possibilities of your playing for the Stanley cup and, this afternoon, | heard rumors to the effect that vou would challenge. 1 was pleased when 1 heard it, and having seen the game between the Victorias and Ottawas here, Saturday night, 1 think you could put up a bettér argument than the Victorias did. The Queen's team play a great chocking game, the for- wards going back to help the defence, and that is more than the Victorias did then, Again, Walsh and Rich. ardson are every bit as fast as the Ottawas in my opinion. Your defence men play hack far, and with the help of the forwards make it almost impos. sible for an opponent to get in olose I 'guess Mills could look after the long ones. . . | | | If your men ever got the cup it would take a lot of heating, to get it away from King- ston, T think, At all events T feel sure that you could give about as nice a demonstration of good hockev as any other eastern team against the Otta- wat, and show the people what Inter collegiate Hockey might be if we all bucked up." About a dozen of the most active workers in the Young Ladies' Guild of Queen Street Methodist church, held a St. Valentine's tea at the residence of Mrs. Samuel Birch, on Wednesday. Red hearts, and sharpened darts, wore all about. the room, and the table centre was of hearts of various shapes and sizes. The teastable was lighted by red-shaded 'candles, red boxes held the candies, and the homemade tablf wad rich in hearts as well ag edibles. The president, Miss Ada Birch, receiv- ed, and Miss Bateman poured tea. Mr, Hellmuth in defence of the charge that documents were misting, said that out of 10,000 letters only sixteen were gone. He jus- tified Mr. Bastedo's contribution of 850 to the campaign fund, by saying that 'it was a contribution levied by Mr. Stratton. Anything that Mr. Bas- tedo had done was the fault of the system inaugurated by the late Sir Oliver Mowat. Hamilton, Grimsby and Beamsville railway has admitted liability for in- quiries received by Jocelyn, and Edwin Cotterill, in a collision on November 20th last. The two plaintifis sued through their parents for $10,000 dam- ages. An interlocutory judgment was signed to-day, by which the railway admits damages, but question the am- ount which will be assessed later. The official colors were fixed, conserva- tive, blue; Liberal, red; socialist, green, Further light was thrown upon some of the methods adopted, when contracts for the new City hall were hanging fire. At the civic investiga- sion, to-day, William Mansell; of the firm of Purdy & Mansell, who had re- turned from California, testified that just before the plumbing contract was let in 1896, he was paid $3,000, by a man named Clarke, an employee of Bennett & Wright. One thousand of this was for the firm of Worthington, Hanett & Armstrong. His firm and several other firms were in the office of E. J. Lennox, the City hall archi- tect, making out the quantities and in return for the money witness had given Clarke the figures he had work- ed out. (Clarke is out of the country, somewhere ' in California, and Judge Winchester said they must have him here. The investigation was, there- fore, adjoutned till February 26th, with the unilerstanding that Mr. Man. sell will come up for cross-examina- tion on Sdturday, so as to permit im to return to California for his health. .
