Hastings Mian, Married Thrice --Property Tangle. Poterboro, Ont., Feb, 16.--A strange story comes from Hastings. About a vear ago John W. Carnnike wax kill ed in a tannery in that village. He left some real estate and personal property. Letters of administration were taken out to wind up the es- tate, Camnike dving intestate. Now there are several claimants af- ter the property. In 1870 deceased married Lydia Crosby, of Murray township, who left her husband three vears after, going to Buffalo, where she has resided ever since. Carnnike later married a Toronto woman and had several children. She died six vears ago and he then wedded a Has- tings bride. Now a daughter und legitimate child of the deceased and his first wife have turned up and claim the property, so do the chil: dren of the second wife. By his third wife deceased had one one child. Big Cotton Pool. New York, Feb. 16.--The recent ru- mor of the formation of a cotton pool, the object of which is to buy up 400,000 bales of cotton of the last crop, is now definitely confirmed. The syndicate which has contributed a fund of more than two million dol lars to finance the pool, is headed by Edward R. Thomas, a young New York. banker, largely interested in the Consolidated National Bank and the Mochanies' and Traders' Bank, He will be the manager of the cotton underwriting syndicate. With him will co-operate a number of prominent men of finance, among them Joseph H. Hoadley, who giicceeded to the position vacated by Daniel J. Sully, when failure overtook . that famous cotton market operator. It is under- stood also that the: Southern Cotton Growers' Association will co-operate with the new syndicate. The object of the pool is said to be not to in- fluence the speculative cotton market, but to help the southern cotton deal ers to obtain thirteen cents a pound for their unsold cotton.
