Billings, North Ridge, one of .the oldest, settlers in Essex county, is dead; in his ninetieth year. He held the office of magistrate from 15892 un- til the time of his death. During the American civil war a party from a Michigan regiment came to North Ridge to arrest four deserters but Squire Billings disputed their right to niake the arresis on British soil. He drove the visitors back without their prisoners and was thanked by Lord Monck, then governor-general.
