"The \N Re maya SECRET LY WHIG, WEDNESDAY, APRIL 11. ------ o- m-- ~ of the HE mysterious rites connected with the healing art, as practised by the natives of that wonderful land, Australia, will now never be fully revealed. Tt is well known, how ever, that so well did the Australian natives know the medicinal virtues of certain roots and herbs that when first discovered by the great English navigator, Capt. Cook, they were practically free from disease. Capt. Cook wrote of them : "I did not observe [among the natives] any appearance of disease or bodily complaint, or eruption of the skin; or marks of any ; and the most severe wounds heal most rapidly. Very old men, without hair or teeth, show no sign of decreptitude and are full of cheer- fulness and vivacity." This was eventually found to be due to the use by the natives of certain vegetable herbs and essences which for untold ages they had known as medicines. Scientists noted well this fact and gradually came to recognize the vast superiority of natural vegetable rem- edies over the harmful mineral products so widely and: commonly used. One day the Australian public were informed that they could obtain a household rem- edy made up inthe form of a small bean; that this remedy was of purely vegetable composi- tion; that it was entirely different to the ordinary medicines and preparations so widely sold, and that it was a certain cure for biliousness, indigestion, liver complaints, headache, constipation and allied disorders. Many. people did not believe that this new bean was any different to or better than the ordinary medicines in everyday use. Others purchased a box for the novelty of the thing. 1As in all discoveries, however, the test of time was brought to bear upon this preparaticn, and with what result? Family after family tried this new discovery and proved that it WAS superior, that it did untailingly cure indigestion, constipation, biliousness, etc, and thereupon they not only adopted it as their family 'medicine but recommended it to their friends. The demand for the [then] new "'bean for the bile" increased so rapidly that the proprietors found themselves behindhand in executing arders to the extent of 40 c Notwithstanding all efforts made to overtake the demand, amounted to over 70,000 boxes. 5 10,000 boxes. the unexecuted orders soon This can well be understood when it is known that orders like those reproduced with this article from Messrs, F. H. Faulding, the great Adelaide wholesale house, and Messrs. Kempthorne, Prosser & Co., were frequently coming to hand, as annexed. Within a few years so phenomenal was the success of this great vegetable it was'decided to introduce it to the teeming millions of the Old Country. this decision known than a leading English wholesale house, which had a branch in Aus- tralia, foreseeing the demand which would speedily arise when this "bean tor the bile" was introduced to England, placed a "first order" for £20,000 worth [$100,000] of boxes for their English house. © Bileans speedily became, and are to-day, the leading Eng medicine.
