Dr. Clarke was loudly applauded when the chancellor conferred upon him the LL.D. degree, ¥ Address Of Dir. Clarke. After acknowledging the honor eon ferred Ypon him and paying a warm #ifiitc to the work Queen's Univer sity is doing Dr. Clarke eulogized the memory of the late Principal Grant, dwelling on the inspiration this man supplied to what he styled the "noble army of martyrs," he gathered about him; men who gavg much for a trifling return, if their reward was 'placed on a monetary basis, Graceful compliments were tendered Chancellor Fleming, Principal Gordon and Deem Connell, and the work the medical department of Queen's was doing commended. Now that the provincial 'government was to embody its broad educational policy in a practical way by endow! ing a' biological building, the future of Queen's medical department was as- sured and if results were the test of efficiency in medicine, as they doubtedly were, Queen's had nothing to fear, said Dr. Clarke, The interests of higher education were identical and broad minded men welcomed progress made either in. A glowing tribute was paid to How- ard, Workman, Ogler and Reeve, and it was shown that only those whe are wise enotigh to "acquire a broad cul ture outside of medicine itself achieve the highest results; and the physician who knw nothing outside of his pills and powders was described as being Just as much 4 cypher in the com- munity as the plodding farmer who closed his £yes and cars to the music and loveliness of nature, The graduate going abroad was "ad- vised to devote {he time he could spare from his hospital work to com- ing in contaet with the artistic and broadening influences so easily reach. ed in Europe, rather than in cram- ming for an ornamental degree. It was shown, too, that the cultured physi- clan was most likely. to attract prac- tice, for people, if they must swallow their pill, prefer jt gilded and sugar- coated, " The graduates were urged to become broad-minded' physicians before speci- alizing as Surgeons, and Dr. Clarke assured them that the mental traning would do them good, and no doubt the supply of appendices would, in all probability, last until they were ready to remove them, 'Reference was also made by the speaker to the ultra materialistic ten- dencics which the study of medic ing undoubtedly tended to develop, It was inevitable that such should be the case and itrvequired the nicest adjust- ment of a cultured and refined mind to hold the balance in face of every- day experience, especially when one considered the amount of theoretical knowledge hurled at their heads so constantly by those who could not view life as the physician found it.' {Happy indeed, was the student who came to Qeen's, where the great pro- |blems of life were faced intelligently, fearlessly and honestly, Queen's stood for liberty of thought and expression that did her honor and those graduates who followed the lines hinted at were a living force in Can- ada to-day. © delicate nature of the relation between patient and physivian was ro- ~ { Dean ( lm 1 bel lents h 1 r I na ' Near 1 fi ' I whe W n Aa } stivel + ' olmost 0 has real this n a g- of ih sion lectures will continue mvocation as that of April, and ame day other faculties: There will be no stiminer session, The reasons which in diced the faculty to continue the six months session have passed away. Several interviews with the members of the government have been held and, as a result, Mr. Whit ney and his colléagues have frankly acknowledged the justice of our' claim and have promi to make an to an nouncement very soon as to the amount which will be available. Our proposal is. to erect a new building, to contain laboratories amd, class rooms for biology, pathology and the. allied subjects, -andirooms for public health work and research. "For such work we can surcly claim pyblic assistance." The fees derived from the education of medical students cannot possibly make adequate pro vision for buildings, equipment and maintenance for the preliminary, scien tific work upon which medical educa tion depends. The fact that so many, other interests are involved besides the education' of the medical student only adds to our claim.
