Production of An Interesting Biblical Play. "The Holy City," a Biblical play, ath story concerning the time of John the Baptist, drew int:rested audiences at the Grand Opera House, on Satur- is by Clarence Bennett, and under the management of Gordon and Bennett. It is now completing its second sea- son, having been well received every- where. Other Biblical plays that have succeeded splendidly are "The Shep- herd King" and "Mary of Magdala," the latter having Been produced in Kingston two years ago bv Mrs Fiske. "The Holy City," ie well wri ten. It includes in its list. of charac- ters several of the disciples. John the Baptist, Herod, Mary Maodalene and Ponting Pilate. The chief charactirs are Marinus, a young Roman, who be- comes a Christian and Salome, the daughter of Herodins, wife of Herod. The production is wholesome snd of decided interest, in contrast with the general type of plays in these times, The parts were all well taken, and the piece was excellently staged. -------------- Method Not Satisfactory. The method adopted by the hoard of works in regerd to the scraping of the remainder of the streets will not prove satifactory. Twelve feet in the centre of the road is left unscraped. In many places the mud in the centre will later be washéd onto the water tables and have to be cleared off by the scavenge. If it remains where it is, watering the roads will be difficult as the loose stull will be dried. quickly and blown about. The opinion of the city engineer is that the whole street should be scraped. It will be no cost- lier in the end. Reserved Bid Not Reached. Two properties belonging to the es tate of the late D. U, Hickey, were put up for sale at noon, to-day. at the auction rooms of J. A. Saler. They - were the brick house known as "Park Villa," oconpied by Prof. Kirk- patrick, at the commer of Barrie and Stuart streets, and the stores 'on Princess street. occupied by Thomas MeAuley and D. Eran. On neither was the reserved bid reached, und no sale resulted, Found On, The Street. Toronto; April 30.--Christopher Hol: land, recently brought back from Eng- land for trial on the charge of steal- ing $13,500 from the Ideal Bedding company, for which ' he 'was book- keeper, pleaded - guilty before the po- lice magistrate to-day, and was re manded for sentence until Monday next. Col. Denison ordered the crown to make a formal complaint against Levesconte, so that the matter might be investigated by the law society.
