Excellent cuisine of former seasons has gained for these boats an enviable reputation and a silent tribute goes up to the chief steward, J. Tilton, of Moulinette. Mr. Campbell, he said, was as expert, and was never consulted when appointed manager last August. He was surprised to hear that such a motion was on the 8. Ald. Toye said that in 1904, Mr. Campbell was notified of the condi- tion of his appointment as expert. No man was more surprised than Mr. Campbell when Ald. Elliott brought up the question, and it was found he had beén re-engaged as manager. He never knew the change had been made, not having been notified. Ald. Elliott--* 'Whether bell was notified or not, he Stsuned the responsibility of manager, has acted as such all along." Ald. Hoag--"He evidently assumed the duties to please the council and committee, Ald. FElliott--*"Mr. Campbell should remain with the corporation to com- plete the work of extensions. Any one who opposes him along that line would not be acting in the interests of the city." Again, Ald. Elliott remarked that the city had too much money invested to have as manager one who is at- tending to other duties as well. The "city, he said, didn't need an expert af- ter the extensions were made. Ald, Givens held that Mr. Campbell was entitled to have his work defined more clearly. The motion of Ald. Hoar was ad- opted. , Demanded The Names. The following letter written by Mr. Campbell to the i forth a short : "Ald. Givens has publicly stated in, that some party or parties had in- formed him that I had received or will receive commissions on goods pur- chased for the city. "Through sion, Ald. Elliott declared that the letter was uncalled for, ¥ Ald. The captain spent the winter at Jacksonville, Fla., and brings news that the ladies are now riding horse back straddlewise. He was glad to see the old British-American hotel about to open its doors again.' The following - was received, this morning, at Sreiy's wharf from Ce D. Wilson, purser of the steamer Alexandria, at Montreal : "A bar, sunk in canal lock; reports say it will be Friday before cleared up. Will be twenty-four or more hours late." As a consequence of the sinking of the barge, the steamer Belleville did not get up yesterday and the steam- er City of Montreal will not arrive to-day. The name of the barge is not known here; however, it. is not likely a local vessel. ---- Pleasant Choir Picnic. The fine weather of yesterday came opportunely for the outing given to the choir of Sydenham strect church, by the quarterly board of the church. A Jolly party of forty persons board. ed the Wolfe Islander and after a t sail were landed at Long Is- and. Park. The grounds were in an ideal condition for the first party of the season. New-mown hay was in abundance and flowers and strawber- ries waiting to be picked. Skifis on the water and games on the green helped the hours to pass all too quick- ly. Mr. Brophy was prepared to sup- ply all the needs, and the lunch © served on the baleony made the lad- ies very ready to join in singing, "He Is a Jolly Good Fellow." e choir's leader (prompted by his jolly consort) succeeded so well as general manager the good time. On the homeward trip a photograph of the party was taken, To Centralize Staff. Brockville Recorder. * Evidence of the intention of the G. T.R. officials to centralize their busi- ness in Montreal is seen in the con- stant reduction of the staff of the shops here. At the present time no clearers are employed here, the fitters have been reduced and also the turn- table men. The pay roll each month for the locomotive department here shows a reduction, evidence of which is seen in the fact that fifteen years ago it was $20,000 monthly, while now it is less than $7,000. The men are gradually being moved, one at a time, and only Wednesday Messrs. Frank Logan and Robert Carr, two voung engineers, received notice to report hereafter at Mon- treal for duty, and will leave this week, their families to follow later. Meters Not Correct. Some of the new gas meters, which have recently been purchased by the light department, have not satisfied Government Inspector Gallagher's test, and the matter was before the light committee yesterday afternoon. The meters come from a Montreal firm, which has been manufacturing them for the past fifty years, and a letter received from the firm states that 260 of their meters are tested every week by government inspectors and not one in a thousand is sent back to have any alterations made. Further tests were to be made here to-day. ---------- A Treat For Friends. It will be hard to show your friends & more appreciated favor than to treat them to our delicious ice cream Soda.
