Brussels, June 25.--Two thousand bachelors from Belgium, France and Germany, swept down dn the village of Ecaussines-Lalaing, Saturday, to find brides. It was the fourth yearly marringe mart established by the maids of Keaussines, "awd as there are only 'minety-seven marridgeable young ladies in the quaint little place, the supply of partners fell deplorably short of the demand. There were all sorts and conditions of men. One man of seventy-two had travelled all the way from Luxemburg to find a wife, to whom he promised a dowry that would place her beyond want. Gay banners of welcome, triumphal arches with mottoes of encouragément for prospective husbands, figures of Cupid and hearts piereed by arrows were to be scen everywhere, At noon the bachelors were formally welcomed at the gates of the village by = the spinster committee. Last year's prosi- dent and several members of the com- mittee are magried as the result of the festivities twelve months ago, and others had been elected to their place. All marched to the "Grande Place," where there was an open-air concert, nuptial marches and love songs. Ad- journment was made to the town hall, (where the young ladies took places at tables on which stood bowls of pink roses with such mottoes as "Hope On," "Love," "Be Trusting'! and "Have Faith." A vacant chair was left beside each girl, and at a signal the men with matrimonial in tent made a rush to secure the seats. Then coffee and a sweet cake were served, followed by a bonbon tasting of licorice, The lady president made a speech on "The art of pleasing man," which was wildly applauded. Dancing i? the open air ended the festivities. Hundreds of letters, many of them amusing, were received from intending husbands, SHORTAGE OF LABOR About 25,000 Men' Needed in Western Grain Fields. Winnipeg, June 25.--"Not for many years, has there been such. a shortage of labor as this season," said J, J, Golden, provincial commissioner of immigration yesterday. TO PLEAD THE CLAUSE ------ i Of Christian Brother Teachers Be- fore Privy Council. Ottawa, Ont., June 233.--Hon. N. A. Belcourt, who is sailing from Quebec by the Empress of Britain, will, in: 'addition to representing the board of trade at the chambers of commerce of | the empire, ar in an ar ent before the" judictal committee bf the privy council, in a cause celebre, in which the separate schools of Ontario are very much intérested. It concerns the right of members of religious com- munities ro teach in. the schools of Ontario without having the prescribed departmental certificates. The matter first arose in the case of Gratton vs. the separate school board of Ottawa, and. the judgments so far are that the members of communities must have the certificates, Tt is claim- ed that, by the provisions of the Brit- ish North America. acty the religious orders ave entitled to exemption as re- gards the necessity of taking the ex- amination. Mr. Belcourt will take this side of the case in the argument before the privy council, Reunion Of Wing Family. Glens Falls, N.Y., June 25.--This city, which was settled hy Abraham Wing and his family in 1764, has been selected as the scene of this year's re- union of the Wing family, incorporat- ed, which includes a great many peo- ple in New Bedford anil other New England cities and towns. The Wings in America are all believed to be des- cendants of Deborah, widow of the Rev. John Wing, a noted non-confor- mist minister of Holland and Eng land, who came to this country in June, 1622, with her four sons and settled on Cape Cod. The family is now incorporated with directors and officers. and maintains an official pa- per. called' "The Owl." Tt has, it is estimated, 30,000 members, Glens Falls was at one time called Wings Falls, It wax first settled in 1702 bv Abra- ham Wing, son of Edward Wine, of New Bedford. Abraham Wing himself was born in New Bedford in 1721, on the paternal homestead in the north- ern part of the city. Abraham trans- ferred the name of tho town to a Mr. Glen at a supper. given by the latter in honor of the eecasion.: Brockville Reunion. The reunion of the old shoys, of Brockville, will be 'held. July 28th to August 3rd, and there will be a large gathering of tho seattered natives, For this Hrock¥ille: 'and Leeds and Gren- ville reunion, the committee are ar- ranging a programme which will sur. pass anything before attempted in Brockville, Each day's events are most interesting. CHASE'S KIDNEY-LIVER PILLS From insurance records it has been found that about 35 per cent. of the deaths of policyholders' with' attributed to diseases of the digestive system, To persons who have been accustom ed to think lightly. of indigestion, bil jousness and liver derangemints this statment will be rather "startling, but it cammot be refuted. * » To a large extent the liver controls the digestive system by supplying the bile to insure the prompt passage of the food along the intéstines, the difficult part of place. Because of their immediate and di- rect ibfluence on the liver, Dr. Chase's Kidtiey-Liver Pills insure a good flow of bile, and by 80. doing positively overcome constipation and intestinal indigestion. Wind on the stomach, rising of sour taste in the mouth, smothering sensy- tions in 'the chest, pains about the heart, headaches and diimige oid, drowsi ness and discomfort after meals apd sluggish action of the . liver, kidneys and bowels are the symptoms of this serious and dangerous form of sndiges- tion. . . . where digestion takes up every available hand. However, even with the railways eliminated, it would be impossible this summer to supply the demands throughout Mani- | toba and the west for farm help to gather thé harvests. Even now we can- | not meet the demand, and as the summer advances the cry for hélp is going to be enormous. My estimate now is that there will be needed at least from 20,000 to 25,000 men to harvest the crops." sm m---- W. 8. FORTY-FIVE THOUSAND Immigrants Have Come to Can- ada Via. Quebec. Quebec, June 25.--Forty-five thous- and immirrants have landed at Que- bee, since the opening of navigation in the first week of May last. The bulk of the arrivals so far this scason via the St. Lawrence are from Scotland and England, and are mostly \young people who have come out to make homes for themselves in the west. The British imanigrants this year SOMETHING NEW AND ARTISTIC IN CHINA CLOSETS We have some perfect beauties in China Closets with bent glass doors. Also Fancy Music and composed ninety per cent, of the to tal arrivals a very large show- ing compared with the percent: age of recent years. The superiority of this year's arrivals in age, physical fitness, education and character is very marked. The new citizens 7 also seem to be well suuplied with funds. The Scotch immigrants which have arrived this season are perhaps the most interesting. They are without ex- ception the finest class of immigrants that has every come from that sec- tion of the British empire, and a ver- itable mass of living gold pouring in- to the country, who no doubt will do great things in the west, Immigration from Ireland has fallen off to a very large extent but the few who are com- ing agross the sea to seek homes in Canada, are splendid representatives of the Celtic race. The city immigrants landing here these days from the British Isles are found among certain classes of the single men and women who are land- ing under the auspices of the Salva- tion Army, and if it were not for the protéction the army gives them would not be in Canada. The writer is compelled to refer to these immigrants as a result of per- sonal observation, and with some re- luctance. A percentage of the men are lacking in moral character and many of the young women are absolutely un- desirable, 5 A few of those settled in Quebec and not long after their arrival they de- monstrated their vicious habits clear- ly, and showed conclusively that they were halped to reach this country for Eneland's good. Foreign immigration, that from con- tinental Rurope. is not as large this season as in the past, consequently the American commissioners connectad with immigration in the United States are not as busy as in former years,' Heretofore the majority of immigrants landed at Quebee were destined for the United States. There is a large Italian contingent coming in to Canada these days, expéeting to find work on the Transcontinental and other railways In course of construction. The Russian and Polish Jews have dwindled down to small proportions and Norwegians are few in numbers.
