The father may be a bad lot, dften is, and it sometimes does follow that one, or more, of the family goes wrong. Again, when the father is all that he should be, there sometimes ap- pears a black sheep in the otherwise correct family. It happens in the par- son's family as well. Being well brought up, and educated, if one goes wrong it appears to be difficult to account for it in anyway. Throwing back, going back to some ancestor whose career was spmewhat wild, or erratic, is held to be the cause by some, the desire for ardent spirits is accounted for in the same way. Some- where in scripture history it says: "The sins of the fathers shall . he visited upon the children unto the third and fourth generations. 2": We have nothing to say in the matter of birth, We simply take long chances on coming along all right. In many cases the fathers have little regard for SINS OF a we have to be ashamed of them, is what cannot be condoned or foi given. Talk as you will, say what you think, you cannot alter this view of the case. : "Frailty thy name is woman." She was supposed to cause all the trouble in tho first place, this does not follow in 'all cases. dt is 'admitted that the women bear the burden better than the stronger sex, that they show far greater tenacity, . in the right way, than' men do. There ate hoth good women and good men. All argument. to' the contrary cannot alter this fact, but, in truth, they are not many, So- cial hypocrisy having such a power in the land to- day as to.make it alivost impossible, in very many cases, for some to lead an absolutel: truthful, honest life. Of the tough clement we all know something: there is reason for it, or it would not exist. The devil is held responsible for all that is wrong, of course, he had a hand in all that is held to be wrong, and is often very liberal in giving a "hand- out" to those that seek it of him. To combat the evil side of human nature we have only example and education. The bad examples, and they are many, are held up to us as warnings we find thom everywhere about us, starting with the beginning of the world's his. tory. We get credit for our individual wrong-daings, and, sometimes, _ for those of our -fathers--should we be held responsible for the wrong-doing of our fathers? We inherit evil ten- what their children may think of them --are merely glfish animals. Others of a sensitive disposition, and some edu- cation, are really anxious that their diseases. For man Norway were crowned there. mm m---- offsprifig should think well of them. We are told that one must forgive all the wrongs and injuries we receive on the way through life. There are many small annoyances that might be con doned or forgiven, but when it comes to crime on the part of parents, we have something that goes beyond for- giveness. It is no use our saying that we forgive, we do not! Those who break the laws of God and man--men and women who violate these laws-- who openly defy them and live to- gether in sin, cannot expect to be forgiven by those who come after them. Do these people stop to comsid- er what the result of their wrongdo- ing will be, how their children, when old enough, will curse them, much less forgive them ¥ Of all the crimes credit ed to mankind, the punishment of in nocent people is about the greatest what greater punishment can befall a child than to discover that the par: ents were wrong, cruelly wrong, mn their production ? That the Mot many,.it is true, but, when a dis covery is made, it appears all the more brutal, there is no other world for it, where educated people are con cerned, Going wrong, doing wrong, ad mitting it, we are accustomed to, but trying to appear otherwise, to brazen it out in society, is when the brutish- ness comes in--the crime is enhanced. To be barred out of all hope of a fu ture life, by not being able to for give everything seems hard, but, being a hypocrite, saying that we do forgive, only adds to the misery adds additional sin. What are we to do about it? - Be warned by the doings of fathers since the world began ? The warnings seem to have lost all terror now, the sin of disobedience to have dropped out of sight. To be utterly and totally selfish, to care for nothing hut sgf, to put all else aside, seems to be all in these cases, Those who escape suffer ing, those who can look back without shame, or regret, for the their immediate relations, are in deed fortunate, but it cannot be ex pected of them that they wrong-doing in others, Sympathy cer tainly exists among sensiiive but the majority are not troubled that way. We _are not supposed to trouble about our meighbors, or meddle in any way with their affairs, if this were strictly observed it would save a great deal of trouble, and we dd not propose to do so. Petsonal wrong, per sonal injury, is what is dealt with here, that we have to suffer for the wrang-doing of others and have no redress whatever. "It is no business of aurs what others may say or do, so long as they do not interfere with us in any way. We. must try to do right ourselves, go straight, be an example to others, if possible. It seems hardly possible that, after thinking it out, anyone deliberately goes wrong. { Surely circumstances in which we are placed--the life---the surroundings ore largely responsible for the greater portion of the wrongdoing. A de liberate lie, a deliberately planned , wrong, must © surely show the worst possible disposition. Absolute wicked ; ness whether inherent or not, is every wheee, has been, and will be always. | We ard. told to be on our guard : against it, to try, if in our power, to erush it out of modern civilization. "How like the father I" "Not at all like the father !"" We hear this on all sides: sometimes it is well to be {like the ' father, sometimes not. Friendship, * honesty and truth, exist' amongst a few, but, we may pass through 'a long life without meeting this greatest of all combina: tions. We may read and hear of it, wish for it, long for it, but fail to find. This brings to mind a certain dealer, teacher of the pel, who, whén asked if he RG he could help & man to get respectable employ- ment, replied : "The world is large." The man took it thus: "Go help your- self; I am all right !" If all: were alike there would be none to do the dirty work, and there is a very large amount of it to be done. Giving way to drink, and evil desires--called by some folly, make a great number fit for this sort of work, and, once so low and degraded, they seldom rise, do not wish to. There are cases, to our knowledge, where after a long and bad carer, men have aetually been known to re- form and ome law-abiding citizens, Imprisonment of soms has had the desired effect, they have gone straight afterwards. This does not generally happen, in most cases it in quite dif ferent. One bad act in a man's life leaves a mark for all time, but, it does not follow that he must continue such acts. "A marked man, I would not care to trust him!" "The son of such a father could not possibly do right !"" We hear this said everywhere, Some never start in life, they sinply exist, others do start--making a very bad ope at times.--HENRY JENKS, The Land We Cherish.
