JOHNSTOWN FLOOD RECALLED BY AN AUSTRIAN DISASTER. Torrent Like Niagara Swept Everything Before _ it--Sixty Houses Washed Awayr-Thou- sands of Fish Stranded. ARCHDUKE FRANZ FERDINAID. Vienna, July 7.---A cloudburst 'at Konopischt, Bohemia, has destroyed the magnificent park belonging to the Archduke Franz Ferdinand--one of the finest in Furope--and caused great loss of life in the villages lying be low. The archduké was aroused at five o'clock, in the morning by the roar of rushing water, and on looking out saw a mighty Niagara sweeping by. He ordered a servant to open the sluices of his great fish lakes to pre: vent a disaster, but the gates were held fast by the préssure of water. Immediately afterward the |dams burst, and the "servant was. washed away and drowned. trees were mprooted and the sixty houses of the villages of Konopischt and Pichin were washed away. Many of the * villagers were still in bed, and were drowned. Sixteen bod- ies have been recovered, and five child- ren are still missing. girl was carried a mile and a wooden house crying for help through the window. Then the house collapsed and she was drowned. In one part of the valley there was a thirty-five foot head of water. When it had passed several human bodies and many cattle were found suspend- od in the branches of trees. Thousands of fish from the Archduke Franz Ferd- inand's lakes lay stranded in the fields. Two companies of engineers from Prague were summoned, but the dis- aster was complete when they arriv- ed. The archduke's chatean was saved, owing to its elevated position. but the stables and cellars were flooded. When the Princess Hohenberg, the archdnke's wife, saw the ¢lorious park and the villacers' homes laid in ruins burst into tears. The destroction is estimated at hundreds of thous ands of pounds. she ESCAPES FROM PRISON. Russian Carried From Captivity By Stalwart Sister. Moscow, July 7.--~A most ingenious | escape from a Russian prison took place in this city yesterday. In the prison hospital ward were two friends, r| Parfenenko and Perkofski, both ar- rested for political offences, the form- or being sentenced to a lone term of imprisonment, while the other was merely detained. Two days ago Perko- pretty girl, came to fetch his clothes, bringing 'with her for that purpose a clothes basket. Evidently she succeeded in spiriting away her bro- nn | ther's friend by means of this basket, for shortly after she left the man was missing, and has not since been heard of, .though the police are doing their » | prison to discover which of the jailers or the wardens fell a victim to the girl's charms, as it is evident that she could not have carried away the basket single-handed. WRECKS ENGLISH COTTAGE. Inmates Find Themselves Prison- ers in Debris. London, July T7.~Two motorists connected with the Calthorpe Manufac- turing company, Uirmingham, wha were on their way to compete in the Scottish motor trials at Glasgow, had a narrow escape from death near Ven- rith early yesterday morning. A mile north of Penrith the road dis vides, and at this spot stands a cot: tage, which is probably an old tell house. On approaching the corner the driver of the car turned to the left in- stead of the right. Realizing his er: ror, he endeavored to swing round; but the car, which was travelling at a high rate of speed, skidded and crashed with great force into the front of the cottage. The porch was demolished, the door smashed, and much brickwork broken down. The falling debris severely cut one of the passengers, and the other suffered from shock. The inhabitants of the cottage, which is a familiar landmark known as Milestone House, were asleep in bed at the time, They were awakened by the crash, and rushed to the door, but could not get out, owing to the wreck: ed car. Fortunately some motorists from Nottingham, who are taking part in the trial, appeared on the scene. They assisted the four tenants to climb out of the cottage, and conveyed the in- jured men back to Penrith. ROBBED BY HIS BRIDE. "Silly Old Dear" Deserted for An- other Man. Paris, July 7.<A commercial travel- ler named Adolphus Darnier had a strange matrimonial adventure here, yesterday, when he, was migrried to a dressmaker, aged cighteen, whom he had courted for cighteen, months. Dur ing the festivities thy 'bride left the room, and when he sought her he found her bridal dress and floral crown torn to pieces, while his bride and his mother's jewelry, to the value of $750, and his own savings, amount- ing to $2,000, were missing. ioned to a curtain was a note, 'with the words, "You are a silly old dear." It was ascertained 'that the bride, dress. ed in black, had kft with a man whe had been waiting for her in the street, GIRL KILLED BY SHELL Was Removing Explosive to Use Shell as a Decoration. London, July 7.-An interesting tale of a sea serpent was told to a erowd ed meeting of the Zoological Soci dy, Ani- last night, by Mr. Meade Waldo and M. Nicol While in a yacht off the Brazilian coast to the north of Para they saw what happened to be fin of a great fish above the water. A large head and about seven feet of a neck of the thickness of a man's then rose above the surface. The head resembled that of a turtle, and the curious creature wriggled in a strange manner, Its fin resembled seaweed. Mr. Waldo remarked that it looked like a submarine below the surface, > REBUILD ST. MICHAEL'S Hamburg, July 7.--The senate of Hamburg has de- termined to rebuild the church of St. Michael, de- stroyed by fire Tuesday. Large contributions from rich merchants have al- ready been promised. Among the historic me- morials destroyed with the church were the flags of the Hanseatic legion, carried d the war of liberation of 1813. All the church silver was saved. Three of the men who were supposed to have lost their lives in the fire have been found. Only one, a Gtell ringer of the church, named Beule, perished. He had lived for 30 years in the tower. AEE MINES IN THE GULF. Led the Czar "lo Postpone His Trip. London, July 7.The Copenhagen correspondent of the Morming Leader says. the reason for the abandonment of the czar's yachting trip was the discovery that mines had been placed in the Gulf of Finland, obviously with the intention of blowing up the imperial yacht. The appearance of a suspicious looking craft, in the gull, led the authorities to employ divers who found several mines. Ly WANTS BIG NAVY. ad Vienna, July 7.~The Austrian delegation has adopted the navy . esti. mates. Count. Monte Cuccoli, commander-i-chief of the navy, in the course of a speech, said the ma- jority of Austria's 'war- ships no longer amet the re- guirements, and the gov- ernment intended to reor- genize- the navy, and in the next estimate would propose the construction of three battleships and several fast cruisers and the reorganisation of the torpedo flotilla. rrr RAHGAIGIIIIIINIIGIIAADIAR ORDERED FROM ERED FROM SOIL. To Prevent Invasion of Undesir- able Immigrants. Berlin, July 7.--A thousand alien ci- garette makers are being served by the Prussian government with orders to leave German territory. With their dependents, 3,000, and they have teen days in which go quit. If they fail to leave they will be forcibly con- veyed to the frontier hy police and ejected into neighboring territory, they total been oiven four- mans in the country's labor market. The minister of the interior has heen investigating thy conditions which exist in the tobaeco industry of the country, and has found that a considerable percentage of those em- ployed in the factories are aliens. Further, it has been discoverpd that the aliens accept smaller wages than those commonly naid to German workers, and that they are depriving German cigarette makers of employ- ment in their own branch of industry. It is alto shown that there is reason to expect that on July Ist. there would be an inereased displacement of German labor by foreigners. The government decided to act promptly and energetically, and, as it was unable to dictate to the manufae- turers the choice of their work-peonle, it decided on the expulsion of the for- cioners as-the quickest means of set- tling the question. The aliens are now heing served with the notices to leave from the nearest police stations. In this manner employment will be found for 1,000 displaced Germans, and it mav he of incidental interest to the East End of London to know that many of the sweated foreigners are ex- pected to Bnd their way to England.
