(ALL ARE ALARMED BECAUSE OF FAILURE TO GET ANY TIDINGS. Furious Storms and Heavy Ice ROBERT E. PEARY. Chicago, July 10.~A "special from Washington to the Record-Herald, says: That Capt. Robert E. Peary hds sacrificed his life in the effort to discover the north pole is the fear of naval men here, who are worried by the failure to get any tidings of the ship Roosevelt, which sailed for the Arctic regions July 16th, 1905. Advices from the American Geogra- phical Society add to their fears. Re- ports are that the weather in the far north this spring and early summer wus more than usually rigorous, that severe storms have been frequent and that the ice is heavy. It is feared that Peary's ship may have been ground to ap ra Re a last summer, wérg to proceed to the farthest possible point of land north of Cape Sabine and within 500 miles of the pole, There he 'was to establish a winter base and make all prepara- tions for a dash across the ice this summer, weather condi- tions would permit, He expected to return by October. Esquimaux and dogs, it is suppos- ed, were taken aboard the Roosevelt last summer. It was thought that a whaling vessel might bring some tid- ings of the Roosevelt. It is now just twenty years since Peary began his work as an Arctic explorer. Pearv's trip of 1880 was made in the Eagle, which traversed much of the northern coast of Green- land. In 1801 he made another "jour- ney to Greenland. He was deserted by his companions, and met with an ac cident, in which he broke both his ankles, and finally was forced to re turn. In 1893 he started out aeain for Greenland. He took Mrs. Peary with him, and on Sepfember 12th, 1803, their child was horn far within the Arctic circle. Peary wintered in nor thern Greenland. intending to make a dash for the pole the next year. He met with insurmountable difficulties, and was forced to return. ass soon as TWO STEAMERS COLLIDE, But Damage Was Above the Waterline. NOT TRIED HERE, Dies as Result of Worry Over Affair, Sweeisburg, Que., July 10.-- Elise Royer, to have appeared at the court assizes, next October, accused of the murder of his brother-i in-law, John Whalley, died last week at his howe in St. Armand Bast, of physieal col lapse, the result of worry and great mental suffering. because of his unfor- tunate position. In June, 1904, Elise Royer shot his brother-in-law, John Whalley, partly in self-defence, partly in anger, while the latter was in an intoxicated and somewhat dangerous condition. Royer immediately took Whalley to the Montreal General Hos- pital for treatment, but the shot had proved fatal, and Whalley died in Montreal on the 19th of June. Royer was arrested and accused of the crime which he had himself voluntarily ad- mitted, but was allowed out on bail of $2,000, It is supposed that the matter prey- el. on the mind of the accused, who was an honest and respected far- mpr of St. Armand, and he is quoted ns saying that the calamity, with its attendant worries, would drive him mad or kill him. The latter of these alternatives has come to pass, and Elise fore a Royer will stand chis trial be- higher court than that at Sweetsburg. PROPHET IN JAIL.
