Committees Will Be' Formed at Different Centres to Receive Subscriptions From School Children and Others. The proposal to de something f- fective and practical te keep frash and geen the memory o: Alexander. Muir, the author of "Lhe Maple Le," Can- ada's national - anthem, -is one that should be encouraged and supported in all parts of the country. In To- ronto a public meeting was held, in which glowing tributes were paid to the memory of the dead author, and a proposal favored to make the me- morial 'national in character. Com- mittees will be formed at different centres and subscriptions received from, school children and others. Just what character the memorial will as- sume has not been determined pon, but there are more enduring methods of preserving the record of a man's work and worth than by erecting a monument of bronze ar stone. This would tend to preserve the late Mr. Muir's memory in only one or two centres. The expression of devotion and admiration to the deceased pa- triot and sweet singer should be of a more ge neral character, Some com: prehensive plan will doubtless he adopted that will find favor with all true Canadians to honor in a worthy way the memory of a man who was beloved by all for his gentle charae- ter, lofty "spirit and intense pa- triotism. Although thousands of copie of his song, '"T'he Maple Leaf," have beon sold, Muir never made one Alexander dollar out of its publication. He liv- ed and died a eomparatively poor man. He was content to have given Canadians a soulful, elevating, stir ring me lody that warmed their hearts and quickened 'their afiections for home and country. His verse may not have been perfect, but it was po- pular and lively. Tt "caught on,' and in the coming years thousands upon thousands met of school chil dren, as well as public-spirited, pro gressive Canadians will sing with new fervor and enthusiasm more intense of the land of the mapls leaf--the fair Dominion of Canada--the best coun- try in the world. All honor to Alex- ander Muir and all success to the wide movement to preserve and nationalize his memory. -------------- Wade's Ice Cream Soda. We, perhaps, should give it a name of its own, it is so unlike much of the ice. ercam soda sold. Everything that enters into it is as pure and perfeet as money can buy. while absolute cleanliness is enforced in every detail of the making and serving. Wade's Drug Store. Looking After Gardeners. The police were on duty, this morn- ing, secing that the market gardeners did not block up the walks with the boxes of produce they offered for sale. The orders were to allow no one to place his boxes beyond the back of his waggon. The difference was very apparent, especially on King street, and, whercar, on Saturday Inst the gardencrs took wp fully" one-third the walk with their goods, this morning there was a much better avemie for citizens, A Different Liniment. It is well worth while to learn the merits of a Jiniment that does more than all ordinary liniments can, and does it quicker. Such a remedy is Smith's White Liniment. It cures when common liniments will not even | relieve. Use-it whenever pain, aches | or soreness exists. Extra large bot- tles, 25¢., at Wade's. Money back if not satisfactory. Have Chosen Well. In regard to the offer of St. State That There Is No Trouble + There. Wright and D. J. Barker, war ak E St. Mary Magdalene's church, Picton, have sent this message to the Whig: "Your statement of the 17th inst, of trouble in the" Anglican church, Picton, in reference to Rev. W. L. Armitage, is not correct. Please contradict." «© It was discussion, not trouble, that the Whig reported among the Angli cans of Picton. If in a short message like that a correct quotation cannot be made what. can be expected of news- paper writers, whe have daily to re cord the sayings of many people ? The W based its report upon the conversati of Pictonians visiting Kingston on an eXcursion, and only a fraction of ie feelings was ox- pressed. The wardens might be sur prised, also, if the Whig gave the names of its informants. It is usual for men and communities about the size of Gananogue and Picton to make scapegoats of pewspapers, but ward: ens of churches are not called upon to do such doubtful work The Whig, to quote exactly, said the congreggtion were excited and indig- nant, there was a sensation among them, and this was true. since the re- porters have the word of a number of Christian people to that effect. They will «tand loyally, na doubt, by their popular cloreyman. on second consid: eration, "after they cool down, hut that they. Fingé been in a warm eon- ditioif"i€ & Jact. the wardens to the contrary notwithstanding. They should remember that they are in, a repre sentative religious capacity, and not bear unfair witness arainst others. The congregation should manfully Lear its own sing and not crowd them on newspapers. Editors are not mere ma chines, and have feélings. Falsehood By Telegraph. The Montreal Star contains in Kingston correspondence, marked "special to the Star," the state ent that the committee of St. George's eathedral had presented Can. on Starr's Dame the con pregation's special choice," and that the bishop had exclaimed : "You may stop there; 1 don't want to hear Can- on Starr's name mentioned again in this connection." It is 'absolutely untrue that the canon was mentioned as a special choice; three names were presented, un- der instructions from = the congrega- tional meeting. It is also untrue that the bishop made any remark of the order stated, The interview was un- commonly smaoth and agreeable, and though his lordship declared he would give preference to the name of a dis tant and able clergyman, he spoke "as being ery kindly of Canon Starr, as one of unusual social gifts and popularity, and one whom he regarded with feel ings aking to those of a father. He had made him canon-residentiary, and quite lately had chosen him for do mestic chaplain, a marked proof --of personal regard. Since the meeting Canon Starr has accompanied the bishop upon his tour of ministra tions, so that upon his feelings, as w I! ns hi standing, the eoined state- ment is an unkind reflection. ren Presented With A Bible. At the close of Sydenham Methodist school, Sunday afternoon, a handsome Bible was presented to Mrs, E. O. White by R. 1). Anglin, on behalf of his class. Mr. Anglin spoke very highly of Mrs. White, and the high esteem in which she was held, and her three children. And their loss he felt would be another church's gain, as he was sure they would al ways be Sunday school workers. He regretted losing her very much from his class. Mrs. White made a very feeling re ply, expressing thanks for the kind ness shown to her. She regretted leav- ing the school working in which she had enjoyed. T. F, Harrison, sup- erintendent, also spoke stating he was very sorry to lose Mrs, White, and the Street George's rectorship to Rev. F, Du- moulin, the Hamilton Times says: | "I'he many friends in this city of Bishop Dumoulin and his talented son, will be glad to hear that the latter | has been chosen for this important field of labor. He is a clever young man, and an earnest worker in the church and the Times believes the Kingston people have chosen well." No Effort Spared.
