Henry Cunningham, tuner from TAKE A LOOK A600 AND SEE HOW YOUR CITY HAS IMPROVED, The People Who Have Made Their Gardens, and Therefore King- ston, Beautiful--An Encour- agement to Go and Do Like- wise. a a Kingston, July 8.--~(To the Edie tor) : When the Civic Improvem ~ Society was formed, the members de clared that they would try all Sorts of ways to accomplish their Object. First, a great deal of publicity atl. given to making Kingston beau tal, the press and public meetings : both called into the service, then suc- ceeded a couple of months of quiet work, in which the 'members put forth a good deal of persistent effort. Once more the help of the public is want- ed. The society is delighted with the number of people who have improved their property, but there are many who have. not. The latter are especi- ally, urged to spend, at least, part of the 'civic holiday visiting some of the successful gardens around the city. No matter how small your plot of ground, you will find some one in the following list who has a fine garden in an equally small lot. If your yard is over-run with burdock and other noxious weeds, visit T. 'F. Harrison's residence, William street, and see how he has transformed a burdock patch in one year, into a fine garden. If your place is shady, walk out Divi- sion street and see the fine ferns at 28, there is a beautiful clematis, the light mauve variety at 220, while just opposite, 248, is a fine lawn, showing what our vacant lots might be. At 270 'Division street, there is a regular riot of flowers, and the poppies are resplendent. Pine street, were it not for three houses, that spoil the ap- pearance of the street, because they have paid no attention to their grass, would be a model street, as almost every household has planted some flowers or window boxes. There is a magnificent fuschia at 104 Patrick street, is worth walking several blocks to see. There are some fine Scotch thistles at the corner of Patrick and Quehec. All four houses there have small gar- den plots, No. @ Chestnut street has fine poppies and mallon, and a gar- den full of black currants. Nearly every house on the south' side of Main street has flowers, while very few houses have attempted to improve on the north. No. 44 is an exception with its wealth of holly hocks. The north side of Cherry street has four or five nice gardens in a small space. If you will cut this list out of the Paper and make a point of seeing these places, you will be sure to add your mite towards civic improvement York street looks so fresh in its coat of white paint, with its fine lawn, and 165 Colborne street, not only is painted a pretty green, but has beautiful window boxes, both homes are worth seeing. Other districts will be noticed in other letters. Be sure to keep your eyes open, and see what your neigh- bor has done. Then go and do like- wise. -- INTERESTED OBSERVER. -------- Were Terribly Chagrined. Toronto Globe.
