Hamilton, Ont., Aug, Carscallen, K.C., M.P.P., chairman of the private bills committee of the Ontario legislature, and member for 14.--Henry Fast Hamilton, lies at the point of death at his residence here. Acute Bright's disease is the trouble. For some time Mr. Carscallen has not been in the best of health, and lately he went to Atlantic City to recuperate. He returned apparently little benefit- ed, and gradually he has been grow- ing worse. The malady took on such a critical turn that his wile, who is TW Muskoka, was sent for. Other rela- tives have been summoned to his bed- side. Dr. McNichol, the attending phy- sician, says that Mr. Carscallen may linger for weeks, SHEDS HIS SKIN. Mine Superintendent Fxhibits a Peculiar Freak. Phillipsburg, Mont., Aug. 14.--~John H. Price, superintendent of the Gold Reef mines, has just finished shedding his skin. It is_a peculiar picce of na- ture's work, the cause of which the medical profession" has so far been unable to explain. Some years ago, by request, Mr. Price went to Chicago, where eminent physicians from all over the world were in session, but no solution of the cause of the phenomena was ob- tained. The shedding of the skin of Mr, Price's entire body is complete, in- cluding the nails on his fingers and toes. The process lasts from three to five days. Nothing To Live For. Toledo, 0., Aug. 14.--Charles B. Funston, general agent of the North American Mutual Life Insurance com- pany, of Mansfield, 0. committed suicide in a hotel here late Friday afternoon. He left this note : "Father dead, mother dead, wife dead no children, no home, no money, no use living, Please notify my sister, Nettie Funston, Columbus, Ohio." Funston is supposed to be a relative of Gen, Fred. Funston. He was about fifty years of age, and had been con- nected with the Mansfield company for about ten years. The body was removed from the hotel after dark, and the suicide hush ed up. Funston drank carbolic acid, and he was terribly burned by the drug. St. Petersburg, Aug. 14.--It is learn: ed in compection with the attempt on Friday to assassinate Grand Duke Nicholas Nicholaieviteh, while the grand duke was watching the rifle practice of the Imperial Guards, at Krasnoyeselo, a number of the guards, who wore suppesed to have been using blank cartridges, had been supplied with ball cartridges. The affair was a deep'laid plot, in which many vi lians wore implicated. A number of the plotters have been arrested. It is charged that these prisoners secured the connivance of responsible officers in" the use of ball cartridge, so that the grand duke might be killed, and no one is able to say who had fired the fatal shot.
