Almonte, Onf., Aug. 14.-The home of John Mantil, Blakeney, about four miles from Almonte, was the scene of a terrible explosion and narrow es- cape from death, Sunday morning. Angus, the nine-year-old son of Mr. Mantil, in some way, dropped a light ed match in a box of powder that was under a bureau. Immediatcdly there was a terrific explosion, the bureau was blown to pieces, a bed completely wrecked and a window in the room was blown from its frame. The little boy was terribly bur about the body, and it is a miracle how he escaped instant death. Al though he is seriously hurt, it is ex- pected that his wounds will not prove futal. De- | independent political ed from the stafi of that paper HY the head of a department in the In terior hranch of the present govern ment, an erstwhile conservative and a relative. It would be intersting if in his next diatribe on the spous system, he would give to the public the re cord and reputation «0 said relative while acting a8 an official, in order that the electors could pass on they wisdom of turning over to editors of le, rather than to excentions, the boon of patronage. As to the Montreal Star, the teach ing of Hs management to the liberal party on the eye of past dections is too well known for comment. Those who have followed the course of that wisely erratic journal could hardly congeive of ifs being true to anything (scarcely even the ori Star, let alone a duly organized assoviation of electors). Yet notwithstanding its ery of "spoils," it would be intersting » this same Star would publish a list of the men it has causéd to partici who stated he was in America, but sonie six weeks prior to his appoint- went, was asked by the writer as to which cabinet minister he was related and to what itical organizatien he owed his good liek, and his reply was that "he knew nothing of Canadian politics or its ministers but that he had a friend on the Montreal Star." As a liberal I might here state it was certainly expected by the people, that in reply = to Whitney's dismis sal, the Ottawa government's action at least show the stuff whereof they were expected to be made, when wit. nessing their friends in Ontario thus slaughtered, but the sweet charity they are exercising would almost be token absolute indiffercrice to their rents or haps a pious pi r tion for death, ! > ~ The Ross government has been, and is slandered in the common statement that "it was due to die because of its corruption and evil administration." What dollar kas Whitney found wrong and wherein has he improved the ad- ministration ? The defeat of the Ross government was directly due to the apathy of the liberal ranks, enused by" the neglect of the liberal leaders in the dominion house, and their failure to see that only the true friends of liberalism had the ear of the government instead of tories, sycophants and political lick spittles. 'the old liberals who stood by the party through years of opposition have too much independ- ence and certainly not the time or in- clination to compete with profession al office scckers that haunt the halls at Ottawa, in order to make known their wants, and if it is that their desires are not listened to when pre: sented through their executive, it will take an abler campaign writer than the party at present possesses to re surrect even the ghost of the old-time enthusiasm that once meant success, In indulging this meek and Chris tian spirit, that the liberal party is exhibiting of late, they are not only gaining the contempt of friend, but the ridicule of enemy. Imagine if you can the late lament- ed Dr. Cleary appointing our friend, the redoubtable Captain Gaskin, to take charge of and handle Peter's Pence and you have an exact paralell to a re cent liberal Appointment. It seems a far cry. a wide gulf, but certainly not wiler than she od exist between a man who has made his life bread and but ter out of the defamation of a gov ernment and the government so defam ed, especially when the latter is be stowing a trust, As to there being no politics under a uniform it is the veriest rot. The sol dier without polities in Canada is a foreigner, a recently arrived English man or an ass--the former two not earing. the latter generally not having brains enourh to care.
