It is with profound sorrow woe chronicle the death of James Godkin, a brief illness at his late home, Plevna, Ont., on Sunday morning, August 12th, 1006. The deceased was the eldest son in a family of three children, of the late Joseph Godkin, who came from Ire land in the early part of the nine teenth century and settled at Oak Leaf. Here James was born on the 26th dav of September, 1828, and con- sequently reached the age of seventy- eight. i After receiving a limited common school education, and acquiring the trade of a shoemaker he married in 1857, Miss Susan Morris, daughter of the late Samuel Morrie, Athens, who survives him. A brief period was spent in farming near Oak Leaf and then 'he moved to Lyndhurst to con duct a 'shoe business whith was very successful indeed. His home was graced with much blessing, there being given unto him eleven children, and when the boys were reaching the years of manhood he moved to the northern part of Frontenac county, where abundance of work in lumbering and farming en gaged the attention of himself and sons. Here, the tide of prosper ity met him, and having retired a fow years ago from active toil = and moved into the village of Plavna, where he lived until the end of his earthly life. In religion he was a Methodist and in politics a conservative, He leaves to mourn his loss a faith- ful and affectionate widow and ten chil. dren : Mrs. George Morris, Delta; Joseph, Watertown, N.Y Samuel Ardoch, Jacob A., Plevna; James D. He Rules Her as Easily as a Well i Broken Horse--A Delightful Trip Down the Bay to King- ston. "Passengers not - allowed on this deck." Now who but would feel that life outside of that deck would be an aching void a hollow farce; a thing devoid of joy, a blank t Especially and "she" was sailing down the Bay of Quinte, its shores dressed in green as fresh as June? So--'"May we go for- ward" we said to the captam, his cheery, "Getting the fresh air?" as he passed us back near the smoke ! stack giving us courage. "Sure," said he, "but it's draughty." Draughty !' Didn't we know that. Didn't we member many a day in the past when we'd been allowed up in the wheel house on the same trip, and we'd hung on for dear life to our long brown pig tail for fear it would be blown ofi, and harfied the wheelsman with questions ? Draughty, rather, but such a draught. No sweeter in all the wide world, No fairen sight than that stretching out all around, We had dreamt of those breezes all night in a happy vague way, but when St. Gregory's bell rang the Angelus and no cab appeared, though we had been up and dressed and eaten al- most all the breakfast that our fa. mily, if not nature, required of us, we felt that they would not blow for us, And again there would be the ex- cuse 30 Ife made to trusting friends in Kingston when we failed to appear "we got left." We felt it wouldn't sound well. When you've told a wtory twice it goed, but when you come along with it a third time, and don't see that you can vary it, you feel it will sound fishy. "It all comes," we wailed, "of not telling--John Smith, we'll call him, though that's not his pame--to call for us. We said we'd never trust to anybody else again, and we have, and here we are," And there we were hanging our head out of window, watch ing the moments fly. "You can telephone and explain," suggested some one. But it didn't sound allur- ing. We felt that it would have been so much simpler to have tumed up on schedule timo as we promised, Ah! it was a swift thought, and we ran down and out to the corner. "Would you please telephone up town and ask why our omnibus hasn't come ?"' we asked. Wo were too agitated by hope to be coherent ourselves and besides the masculine voice has a peremptori ness, if need be, which demands obwii one The answer was a thundering of hoofs down the steep hill, and a pair of the horses which Prince Ed ward breads, galloped up, "Hustle now," and we hustled. The mighty bays leaped forward again, up the hill, and a race along the level, round the corners with a whoop wha eared? and down the hill they charged again, sure-footed, till they dashed upon' the dock. "Ladies first, as the man said to his wife when they met a bear," remarked a fellow-passenger politely, as wo stepped down after our post chaise experience, and it seemed ap propriate. We felt "John Smith" ns he leaned against the storehouse door Natehing us, was saying, woachful ly, if vou'd told me this would never have happened." So we slid un obtrusvicly onto the Jessie Bain and sailed out to meet royalty, We met her just up the Long Reach, steaming down the bay, and proud she looked in the morning sunshine, frosh as n new dollar. She is very spick and span--but everybody knows this, We drew alongside and shifted to her quickly, The captain handles his big craft as easily as you'd turn a well adjusted door knob.
