Did yout ever sce any one trying to wash themsdves without soap or water ? li you did what would you say to him ? It is every bit as foolish to try to get rid of Dandrufi and to prevéat baldness by feeding the germs which cause it with Canthrarides, Vaseline, Glycerine and similar substances which form the principal ingredients of most so-called hair growers. Newbra's Herpicide is successful be cause it attacks and kills the para- sitic germ which feeds on the hair roots, It is the ariginal and only wenuine scalp germicide manufactured. Cttawa, Aug: 24.-Col. Bridge and Capt. Martin, of the imperial ne mount commission, are expected to visit points in Ontario and Quebec very shortly. They have secored a splendid class of horses, in Western Canada, but could have done better had their instructions not restricted them to a maximum figure of $125 for cach animal. During the South Afri- can war the maximum price paid for Canadian horsez by the British cov- ernment was $150. The Ottawa company of Encineers, to have visited Montreal on Labor day, have decided that it will be im- possible for them to carry out their rlans in that connection. The Gov- ernor-General's Foot Guards are go- ing to New York at the same time, ond it is said that objection was made to two corps leavin~ the city at the same time. Sir Wilfrid Laurier and several of his eolleagnes will be back at the capital by the first of next week for a cabinet council. Hon. Charles Hyman, minister of public works, has return od. Important Tax Decision. London, Aug. 24.--An income tax case of considerable importance to ministers has just been decided. Rev, Henty Varley, a Congregational min ister at Bowes Park, claimed that he was entitled to make a special deduce tion of $25 from his assessment, this being the estimated value of the rea- tal of his study. The ground of his claim was that the renting of a study was an expense incurred, "wholly, ex clusively. and necessarily, for the pur pose of his profession." A similar allowance is usually' permitted to doctors in respect to their consulting rooms. The point raised hy Varley had in Scotland been decided in favor of the crown. When, there fore, the matter came before the tax commissioners of Enfield, they felt bound to disallow it. But Mr. Var ley's solicitors have since then receiv al a letter stating that the crown would not contest his case, and re questing a statement of his costs, Rev. Henry "In pill form and liquid," Lydia Pinkham's Vegetable Compound, at Gibson's Red Cross drug store. G. E. Amyot, president of Quebec Board of Trade, will accept the liber- al nomination in Quebec county, for the seat vacated by Hon. Charles Fitzpatrick, Toronto. -" howrs after the fivsl, * wrile tr Ay Hs Agent. a. T, RB, J; P. GILDER- SLEEVE.
