A LIVELY FIGHT r -- Ends in Police Court ance, Last evening about a quarter to eleven o'clock, when the police * were patrolling Ontario street, their atten- tion was attracted by a row in pro- gress in one of the hotels. On enter- ing the barroom they discovered James Tyo and Patrick Dee sprawling on the floor in the midst of a fight. That is how the pair came to spend the night in the police station, and face Ald. T. J. Rigney, this morning. Tyo pleaded guilty, and was sen- tenced to $5 or two weeks in jail. Dee leaded not guilty, The police testi- to his being drunk and fighting. The reply was that fhe church corporation intended shortly to fence in the thoroughfare on Brock and Johnston streets. Since then nothing further has been done in regard to the matter. An effort will no doubt be made to have the thoroughfare con- tinued in existence, If the church cor- poration will not accede to the city's request regarding repairs then the city will have to buy the Mand. SHORTIS STILL HERE. He Was Never Released From Im- prisonment. There are many people in Quebec province who think that Valentine Shortis, the Englishman, who created such a tremendous sensation by the murder he committed at Valleyfield some years ago, is no longer imprison- ed. The belief is that Shortis, when his transfer was made from St. Vin- cent de Paul to Kingston, was quietly released, dnd returned to his home in England. : This idea is absolutely wrong. Shortis is behind the bars in the penitentiary here. He is in the insane ward, and hence does no par- ticular work. He mopes about most of the time like those whose minds are slightly unbalanced. Shorts' parents still reside in Waterford, Ireland. ---- Twin Foes To Happiness. A pale face means pale blood. Pale blood _ means low vitality. Enquiry at Cressv by a Whig re- porter, this morning, brought forth the reply that the body of Robert Parsley, the deck-hand drowned off the Steamer Belleville, had not yet wash- ed ashore. The nine-day theory of the rising from the water of a body has been shattered in this case, as the accident occurred a week ago¥ last Sunday. "The best yet" was the unanimous voice of St. George's choir boys on Wednesdays picnic. Vans laden with men and boys of the cathedral choir, together with sundry baskets of good things, left the hall at 9:30 in the morning and spent the day at Kings- ton Mills. Ball games, swimming races and sports of all kinds, ending with a bumping contest and tug-of-war made up the programme, and was rendered possible by the two sumptuous '¥eeds" provided by the generous friends of the choir, both of which were des- patchéd with all the vigor of juvenile appetites.
