John Dunlop Says Church Union and Its Benefits Are 'More Ulearly Seen in the Foreign Field Than at Home. Rev. John Dunlop, wife and four children are home, on furlough, from Japan, where the former has en- gaged in active missionary work for the past eight years. Mr, Dunlop. is stopping with his father, Wiliam Dunlop, Union street, and expects to {be on this side of the Pacific for the next {welve months. During that time he will probably visit many cities in ! Canada and the states, outlining 10 | the different congregations the prin- | cipal features of the work to which he is devoting his life energies. In unity there is strength, and of necessity this unity is a greater force there than here. The idea of church unity practically originates with the missionaries, The Anglican missions are united of course, and so are the Roman missions, The Preshy- terians have also seen the wisdom of that course, and now the 'Methodists have taken up the plan and are all uniting, instead of as formerly there being a Canadian = Methodist church and two American M.E. churches in the field. Going further all denominations, through their representatives, work more unanimously together than at home and the spirit of church unity is more keenly felt there than in the older countries, As for Japan' itself one would: sear- cely know that the land had recently. been under the strain of a great war, so little are the effects in evidaice, There is one thing that strikes one and that is the fow Europeans to be met with in the cities of the interior. These Jew are almost solely mission- aties, dhe exceptions ' being an occas- ional teacher, The business agencies and comsular services which are man- ned by Europeans are to be found on- {ly inthe ports. During the time of war Rev. Mr. Dunlop was loaned hy the Preshy- terian mission board to the Y.M.C.A. and did work in the Manchurian camps as general field secretary. Or. dinarily he has charge of a province in the interior. Two months ago yester- day he left Mukden, stopped a week in Port Arthur, and meeting his family at Yokohama, brought them on to America with him, In his native town 'Mr. Dunlop sees little change excepting in the oytlving districts. In fact on his last furlough he noticed the differ- ence more than this time. One thing, however, is in evidence, and that is : large number of missing faces, and the unknown ones, which have taken their places. ; TNCIDENTS OF THE DAY. United States Comsul Van Sent, of Kingston, reports to the Bureau of Manufacturers at Washington that the commercial relations of the United States with Cpnada are getting clos: er, and gives some interesting rea- sons. Con- siderable quantitiss of hardware, brought to Canadu from Fagland, it seams, are of United States manufac: ture, and hence the U, 8, exports to Canada are really larged than the statistics show. United States com- mercial sentiment has largely increas ed in Canada by the re lationship of people ftom each country sottling in the other. Thousands of United States tourists pass through Canada each year, and they help to strength- en the commercial relation, The church and the theatre, tog, are responsible for increasing the friendliness, ami, accordingly, the business intovests of the two countries.
