FOR GAS HOLDER FOUNDA- TION EXCAVATION. ---- Alexander Tait Got the Contract For $4,545-This Amount is $455. Less Than J, M. Camp- bell's Estimate. The ecivie light committee hat "a special meeting, yesterday. afternoon, to open tenders for excavating and doing the massn and conereté work Jor the néw gas-holder foundation. -In aténdanee were Alds. Toye (chair man), Elliott, Gaskin and Kent. When the matter was first before the committee, last month, J; M. Campbell estimated that the founda- tion work could be done for $5,000. It was decided to eall for tenders, and the result was that the lowest contruct price was $6,050. Then the committee decided to do the work by day labor, and reject the tenders. Re- cently, it was given out that a couple of contractors would undertake to work within the £5,000 estimate of Mr. Campbell, and the committee had a conference and decided to eall for new tenders. These latter were re- ceived at yesterday's meefing, and the lowest was $455 less than Mr. Camp- bell's estimate. Three tenders were received. Ww, H. Mitchell's was not given in a bulk the other sum, but was far above . two. R. Wallace's figure was $8,650, and Alexander Tait's $4,545, The lat- ter, being the lowest, was accepted. A marked clieque for $500 was requir- ed with each tender. Instead of thie amount being retained, the successful tenderer is allowed to give satisfac: tory bonds to the extent of $1,000, Mr. Tait is the city's stone contrac tor, and can handle the rock cxcavas tion to advantage. ------ in HUBBY IS MISERLY.
