When. there is a general repudiation of William Randolph Hearst, on the part of the press, when he is _ held up as the representative of "'yéllow- ism," which generally means all that is disrey ble in public or journalis- tio life, it is refreshing to read the Panogyri¢ of a friendly pen. Arthur Brisbane is the editor of the | New York Journal, and has been since 1897. He is one of the most brilliant as well as most prolific. of write e and is credited with a daily perform- ance of service which is phenomenal in its character. He is the intellectual force behind the multi-millionaire, He is credited by some with being the originator of all the schemes which keep Hearst before the people. Naturally Me. Brisbane is most laudatory in opinions. He describes Mr. Hearst as a big man, in stature, a% a man of great nervous as well as physical strength, a good listener, a person of few words, He is enterpris- ing, owns nine newspapers, as well as various periodicals, a million acres of land, farms and houses and mines. He is a great employer of labor, and ex- pends snnually in the direction of his varied interests about fifteen millions of dollars, He will have no alliance, it is said, with other employers and has excited the hostility of his contem- poraries by paying for things more liberally than they. Finally he neither smokes nor drinks, has no fondness for the dissi- pations which attend wealth generally, and possesses the qualities that make {for Success. Mr. Brisbane is quite sat- isfied that ho will make his mark in politics as he has 'in journalism. "There is no doubt, that he will be clegted president of the United States bif lives," as "he is the most pop- ular individual in' the nation to-day." His editor concludes by saying, that "many men will be ashamed 'of the slanders invented or circulated con corning Hearst." On reading which one is forced to the conclusion that, he must be shockingly bad or shockingly misrépresented. The editor of the North American Review does not agree with Mr. Bris. bane' and presents this aé a set off to the panegyrie on Hearst : "As a journalist, tho terprising, and resourceful, he is a burning disgrace to the eraft; as a politician, though shrewd and at times even sagacious, he is no more scrupul- {ous than the basest of _ those whom ihe has stigmatized as criminals; as a | partisan, though keen, en- Wm.
