Montreal, Oct. 16.--B. Macaulay, secretary and actuary of the Sun Life, put through a severe examination at the session of the insurance commis- sion today with regard to the me- thods of the company, in writing ap and writing down securities in their annual t and loss on investments statement, and returns to the govern- ment, The dominion counsel, Mr. Shep- ley, took up with the witness the statement of securities bought dnd In the latter year were several cross entrances. One side showed an appar- ent Joss in the sale of securities, and the other an apparent gain of the same amount in the sale of apother. The idea was that one security de- preciated gnd to prevent this being apparent the cross entry system was adopted. In one case whofe there had a loss of $25.000 on Michigan written up for the corresponding am- ount. This item appeared in the cash book, In the 1993 statement 'there was interest item of SIR000 on certain Propeties, the mortgages on which had been foreclosed. There had been no interest on these properties that year, and the amount had been taken from the interest on other securities held by the epmpany for business pur- poses. The witness defended these transactions on the ground that they were done commonly by business com- panies. Mr. 'Macaulay stated to the commission that the Sun Life did not Pp a regular cash book but a sort of journal instead, in which other items than cash were also entered. Commissioner Kent criticised this sys- tem strongly, on the ground that it was unbusiness-like, and Mr. Shepley said that it made going through the books very difficult and misleading.
