Keel Plates of Vessels of Dread- naught Type to Be Shortly Laid--At Sea in Two Years. Berlin, Oct. 27. Fresh detpils are published of the restless energy with which Germany is accelerating the completion of her fast-expanding fleet, The keel plates of the new battles: ships of the Dreadnaught class and the huge new armored eruiser will be luid within the next six weeke. Several thousand extra worimen will be employed, which will render it pos- sible, for the ships to, be completed the same time, that is to say, as has hitherto been ' required for the con- struction of battleships displacing only 13,000 tons. The first of the German Dread: naughts will be launched toward the end of 1907. The contractors have promised the imperial government that all the ships orderad shall be ready to hoist the pennant and join the German fleet by the spring of 1909, unless their trials should greatly delay their commissioning. "It is also announced that the new German destroyers of 530 tans will have four engines, in place of three, as hitherto, and will develop 10,000 horse power. Berlin, Oct. 27.~The kaiser has re- fused the offer of the Duke of Cum: berland to renounce his claint and that of his eldest son to the throne of Brunswick, if his youngest son may become the duke. The Norddeutsthe Allgemeine Zei- tung, which publishes the correspond: ce on thé subject between the duke and the kaiser, states that the .dulke mude his offer conditional on the um- derstanding that he retained for him self and his eldest son the right of succession in the event of the extine- tion. of the line of his youngest som, The emperor has replied that he is not in a position to further consider the request, as the resolution of the federal council of 1885 still prevails. The resolution decided that the dukes could not be reconciled with the fund- amental principles of the treaty, which constituted the empire, owing to the nature of his relations with Prussia. Prince Buelow, in replying to the €, who asked that he should sup- port his proposal before the emperor, wrote that he was unable to do so. Eagle Hill News. Stephen Birdsall, a farmer, fifty- eight years old, living near ho town, Chesterfield township, N.J., committed smricide by hanging himself by winding a.rope around his neck and another end around a tall corny stalk in a field at his home. Birdsall had been in a field sowing grass seed in the early morning, and upon being missed a search was made for him. When found by his son the farmer was dangling from the cornstalk, strang) od to death. A widow and two 'sons survive.
