Free Mcre--The Perth Road Arbi- tration. § wn The atiitreloee oi the Perth Road expropriation by county hope to have all the evidence by next Sat- urday: They will sit on Fridav. after noon and continue holding sessions till all witnesses have been heard. T. J. Rigney, representing the county council, says that the county's pre- Selfkation will © be brief as a to t of the road company. No sit- ting of the arbitration board has tek- en place since last June. The county council desires to have the finding "of | the," arbitrators before its' Navémber meeting so. that the expropriation may be discussed, and the question submitted to the county ratepayers at the January elections, The last witness examined was Pro- fessor A. K, Kirkpatrick, who made a survey of the road for the company, and who placed a valve of about $33. 000 upon it. This is a decidedly sub- stantial amount as compared with the $3,000 offer of the county council. When asked by the arbitrators if the company was prepared to accept this offer of $3,000, J. L. Whiting, K.C., replied : *We not only refuse to ac- cept it but we scorn it." The county council fioures upon the value of the road at the acre rate. There are about one hundred acres in it, and $30 an acre is suggested, It is claimed that the road is of no more value than it was when the company. bought it piece by rieee, The road extends for twelve miles. The company takes a different view, claim- in» that it has spent thousands of dollars upon the road, and is entitled to a consideration of this when the amount of expropriation is being fix- ed. Will the people of Frontenac vote to purchase the Perth road at any amount, in order to get the tolls struck off? In some sections there would doubtless be a strong feeling in favor of purchase, on account of the abandonment by the company of the Loborough Lake hridee, and the con- P serjuent trouble; Wolfe Island, Howe Island, and the back townshive are not likely to supmort the purchase The conntg council has to consider the oucsticn of having the freed 'roads repaired. For instance, the county council freed the York road of tolls, but that road has ever since lacked re- vairine, Kinoston township through which it. Pacers obiects 'to hecomine responsible. Who is voine to keen the roads in revair? The people of Fron- tense will have to know that before they vote monev for the werchase of ronde in order that they may be freed of tolls.
