"gyriology and the Old Testa- ment' --Evidénce Should Not Be Twisted For Controversy. The fifteenth mani conference of Queen's University concluded this were by Rev. Prof. Jordan, in connee- tion with his series entitled "Fhe Old {Testament as a Problem." "Bubslon and the Bibl" was the subject of Prof. fan's lecture, Thursday evening. The lecturer began by stating that the light of the new ! now available we reconsider the old contrast Babylon and in knowledge must hetween Zion, This is now a complex guestion that needs fo be faced with calm im- partiality. No one who could in any sense be called a student would ever dream of thinking that all goodness and perfection was embodied in Israel and that Babylon was the incarnation of all the vices. The fiercest bigots have never gone to that length and certainly to enlightened prophets such a view was impossible, But on the other hand it is possible, when all light frome sources ancient andemod- ern is thrown upon the subject, to maintain that there is historical jus- tification for linking the -cthical ideal with, the name of Zion, while Babylon stands in the main for" worldly sei- ence and commercial success. The more we study the history of the two. nations, the more clearly do we sce that there may be close contact hetween two peoples without slavish dependence of matters of thought and life, in fact there may be great sim- ilarity in external form and great diversity in spiritual content. Out of very similar surroundings, according to the genius and inspiration. With which different. peoples are endowed, may arise glifferent forms of faith -and conduct. According to Prof. Delitzsch, the most enthusiastic representative of Bahylon, the state religion of that country remained for three thousand Sarre polytheism. Ewen a super- ficiul sketch of the history of Israel shows the nation is independent of its people, and the religious originality of ite prophets. We gladly welcome all weliable information concerning atcient Babylon. But while this ilfus- trates many things in the life of the Hebrew people, it does not tend to lesson our sense of the great fontribu- enabled to make to the life of the world. This morning the subject dealt with bv Prof. Jordan was '"'Assyriology and the Old Testament." This new branch of leafning came into exist ence during the nineteenth century first it~was cultivated mainly because it was supposed to furnish confirma- tion and illustration of the Bible his- tories. The name Assyriology is not strictly correct, but if in general use among scholars; it now represents a large sphere of rescarch. The -number of specialists in that field is gradually increasing, in faet it has become so large that it threatens to swallow up Old Testament criticism. The Cld Testament student must examine 'care- fully Prof. Hommel's statement that it is from external evidence that the final decision of Old Testament ques- tions must come.. He cannot forget that 'tht Jerchmeel theory came from that quarter, and is a very fine speci- men of that kind of evidence. We ad- mit that the Old Testament has = re- csived a new backeround and enwiron- ment, but we still believe that its creat ideas are ®o be interpreted main lv from itself. The attempt to explain everything from Babylon mav be car- ging too far. | After illustratine this point the lecturer eave a statement concerning the Tel-el-amarne tablets and showed that while these valuable documents shed" great 'light upon the state of Palestine before the Hebrews came into it, they need careful inter rrotation and do not of settle the historical cuestions which are in dispute. It is a Christian duty to accent 'evidence from all quarters, and not to twist it about far contro versial purposes, Hints To Huntsmen. With the hunting season open, a few suggestions to lovers of the rifle and big game will not be amiss, and the following. pointers will be well worth commiting to memofy : Don't shoot umtil you are positive what you are shooting at. Don't shoot-at a bush, because it hgppens to moye. There is such a thing as vind. JF Don't drag=6¥gun by the barrel af ter you under any circumsiances. Don't take more than very littl liquor with you to be used only in case of emergency. Remember vou are on 'a hunting trip and not a spree. Don't carry your 'yifle cocked. The day of scnlprhunting Indians has passed and most big game will give vou a chance. 5 Don't point your gun at any living thing while vou are seeing how steady vou can hold the firearm. The opening of the autumn session of the British parliament brings the House of Lords question to the front. As it is likely to r emain there for some time it. may not be unprofitable to indicate the salient outlines of 'the controversy between the peers and the people: nie ~ The House of Lords is the only legislative chamber in the whole of the territories where English is spoken which is based solely upon -the here ditary principle. Leaving on one side new creations, . the lords of appeal ond the bishops, no man sits in the upper house oxeeping for the reason that he is the son of his father, al- though in the case of the Irish and Scottish contingent he must add to that original qualification the fact of his election hy the peers bf Ireland and Seotland to sit as their represen: tative in the imperial parliament. As at present constitisted the House of Lords contains 593 members, against 670 Toembers of the House of Com- mons, all of whom are elacted by thé householders of the three kingdoms., Of the 593 'persons who have a right to #it iff the upper' house, a ri which the majority rarely exercises, twenty-six gre bishops, who sit by virtue of their position as representa- tives of thé immense landed estates of the established church. But the Honse of Lords js always held by a solid stalwart ma- jority of conservatives. The liberal minority may number ten per cent. of the whol: house, but not more than , that. It is the permanence of this overwhelming tory majority in upper house which has at brought about the political erisis: in Great Britain, < For at the last gine- ral election, the constituencies by ma- joritiew without precedent elocted ' a House of Commons in which the eon: servatives were onl 158, as against 512 of the combined forces of = their political opponents.
