Marie, Ont., Nov. 20.-- The steamer Iroquois, 'which saved 'a portion of the crew of the wrecked steamer Theano, a few hours before, narrowly escapad being wrecked on the same spot as the Theano. She was running straight for the rocks, and was only twenty vards of them When the snow cleared up, enabling her in time to detect the danger and shear off. As it would have been madness to put off in the dense dark- ness, with the heavy seas then rum: ningi'the two life boats stayed by the sinking Theano until the boat finally foundered at 3:20 on Saturday. One boat, unddr command of Capt. Pearson, and with nine men on board, with the help of a small sail which they wmfurled upon an oar, fimally reached Port Arthur, the men being almost dead from exposure. After a desperate strumole for hours, the se- cond boat. with eleven men. reached Hare Island, five miles from the wreck. They were taken off by the steamer Troouois, which ohserved their signals of distress in passing close hy. CASE DISMISSED. ---- An Action Over a Torn Coat. Harold Godwin, an schoolboy. a son of J. G. Godwin, and Frederick Aylesworth, principal of the Frontenac school were the prin- cipals in a case tried before, Judge Madden, in the division court this afternoon. The father of the lad sued Mr. Aylesworth for $1. The amount was claimed for damages to a coat worn by the lad at school, and which was torn, so it was alleged, by the treatment accorded the boy by the principal. After hearing the case the judge dis missed it without costs, Mr. Mowat appeared for the plain- tiff. and J. L. Whiting for the defend- eleven-year-old In the witness box the hov told of the principal having torn his coat, and he exhibited his coat to the court. He also claimed that the principal punished him about the legs with » strap. The affair occurred at recess and the lad notified his father of the occurrence, To Mr. Whiting, the lad admitted that he had been sent to Mr. Ayles worth by his teacher, for misconduct He also admitted that he had refused to hold ont his hand to receive hie punishment, Mr. Aylesworth Yold of the lad hav ing misbehaved, and said that he had Jaken hold of the lad by the coat col ar, Mr. Whiting said that no case had heen made out, that it had simply been a case of ordinary nunishment.
