If the good editor, will permit me, 1 hope to s:nd, occasionally, any notes of inter: est which may pass our way. But first we beg to acknowledge the receipt, of . many letters of sympathy aud SuFrow and indulgence, but since as yet we have periormed no worss of supererorgation, nor made any sacri- fices worth while, we must deline to accept. We live in a good house, have all the necessaries, and a few luxuries. Four other foreign fellow workers, good climate, winter quite that of ©'n tario, summers somewhat hotter, among the mest ancient and cultursl Orientals, work enouch to keep usin good heaith, and happy hearts, which do good like a medicine, the very place we have long sought, where we can do the greatest to the greatest number, in the greatest need, in the shortest time. Our residence of two and a hall years has been more consecutive than instructive. We had the honor of being among the, pioneers of this 'statian, living for a year in three rooms. 10 x 12, where we made our first and continued attack on a language forty thousand strone.. ever stimulated by the fact that what has been done can be done again. A few notes of this most difficult language in the world, may be of interest. The learner's first task is to memor- ize the alphabet . which consists two hundred and fourteen (214) moth- er roots, or radicals. The entire Chin- cse language is made up of the above named 214 radicals, which enter in whole or part into the formation of every word or character, though they give little or no clue to its meaning. Herein lies the difficulty of the lan- guage as each of the more than 40,000 a good, of charactirs must be learned as ir pendent words if ome would speak fluently and rad it intelligently Another, if not a greater difficulty, is rty of sounds (not words.) ¢ only (11%) four hundred and the cighteen sounds in all Chinese, and each of one syllable only. ! Then to make mathematics easy we have 400 sounds and 40,000 words, therefore 100, words of © the same sound, the fact is there are single soumds which have more than 300 words, while others may have more than thirty: then the sound "ren" may mean one of 300 things. which vou wast discerh by the context or meaning in the spoken lan {guage, and by the character in the | written language. But this poverty of | sounds is compromised with, by what {we call "tones," and which may be | illustrated by the scales of music. For example, anyone of all the 115 sounds may occur in any one of the four e.g., "do-ray-me-so." Then to return to the original figure of 100 words with one sound, twenty-five are tones, "do's," twentv-five are "rays, ete This is the occasion of endless tron ble and mistake to the foreigner who savs "do" for "so" and "'me' "ray" or "ray" for "do." When, 'to {these difficulties youn id a | the constructive difference or idiom é we say "give me a glass of water." Chinese say '"'take oney water comi."" We must first think it out in Fnglish, then be under the in tense mental obligation of an object transition into Chi These are mmone~ the more diffi nese cult thin*s, all of which, however, yield jn time to patient, persevering toil. and sticktoitiveness.
