Baron Courtney Says Imperialism is Temptation of the Devil-- Lords Needed Because Com. mons Are Untrustworthy. London, - Per. 8.--Léonard Courtney, long prominent: as a govern: ment official, and well known as an independent thinker, speaker, peace advocate and denouncer of the Roer war, was dined. last night. by friends in celebration of his recent eevation to the House of Lorde, wpan which oe- cgsion he took the title of Baron Courtnéy of Penwith. He made a remarkable speech 'on the Position of the Rritish parliament in relation to the eountry. The House of Lords' strength, which 'was not great, Was derived, he said, entirely from fm- perfections of the House of Commons. If the latter house were . better they would not want the House of Lords at all. The House of Commons was the most inadeanate and the least trustworthy reflection of the judg. ment. of the nation. Nothing, declared the speaker. conld be worse than the present outlook. In one house there was an avoarent con- gestion of democracy. and in the oth er the embodiment of all the prejud- ices of position. Baron Courtney de nounced the werlike svirit of recent vears. Imperinlism, he declared. was a temptation of the devil, who is the arch. imperialist, It was a renroach that Cript Pri- tain should be a mation of fighters. Jt ought to be a nation of peacemakers. Daniel Derbyshire, of Brockville. de fended the government. He said that largely as a result of the policy of the present government, cheese had re: presented an addition of £3.5000.000 a vear to the wealth of this country. Cool curine rooms. refrigerator cars, and refrigerator compnctments on ocean vessg's had given a tremendons fillip to the cheese trade. Nothing had so tended to the welfare .of this country as the poliey of the minister of agriculture in placing sech Cana dian products in prime condition on the British market. To-day the British Whig pre- sents to its thousands of readers the largest edition of a regular daily paper ever printed in King- ston. Including = the Christmas number, it consists of 28 pages of interesting reading. The holiday number will 'be found especially pleasing, no. oily for good stories and beautiful illustrations, "bit from an advertising point as well. The leading merchants of King- ston have shown themselves to be for the famous real- progressive and up-to-date in their advertisements which are printed in colored ink. Here the "best bargains in Christmas goods may found. And it dis well to remember that the choicest goods and the closest prices are to be found in the stores of the 'men who know how to advertise. Look carefully over the advts. in the Whig to-day, and you must ad- mit the claim. Do not then, for- get that the store which adver- tises best can render you the best service. The Christmas number is included with the regular idsue without extra charge. There are few cities the size of Kingston that produce a daily paper equal to to-day"s Whig in size and quality.
