A large number of St. Lawrence ward voters have waited upon' Ald. John Carson since the announcement was made that he was retiring from the council, and urged him to stand again for aldermanic duties. In view ol the wishes of so many citizens, Ald. Carson has practically decided to run again. Another valuable council mem- Ald. Elliott, who, likewise, has been waited upon by many of his St. Law- rence ward constituents and urged to represent them another year at least. Tea And Concert. The annual tea mesting and concert of St. John's Presbyterian church, Pittsburg, was held on Wednesday night, and was a great success. Tea was served early in the evenine. and the programme folloived. which was given by Messrs. W. Rogers, 8S. Smith, I. Rutherford and A. McMahon, com- posing the Harmony Male Quartette, assisted by Miss Keating. elocutionist, and Miss Mae Hinckley, soprano solo- ist. The programme consisted of sev- eral fine numbers, and was much ap- préciated by the audience, every selec tion being warmly applauded. The chair was occupied by Dr. Richard- son, Kingston. A Local Friend Saw the Swindler in Westmount For a Western Man and the Deceit Was Soon Made Known. . Montreal, Dec. 20.--Another petty operation has been exposed in this city, the title of Rev. Robert Kerr. He ad- vertised in Toronto < papers that he had two Scotch girls to place im po- sitions and received many enquiries to all of avhith he agreed to send the girls, All that was necessary was to send railway fare. This was done to many people. There was a good attendance at a meeting of the Vegetable Growers" As. sociation, held last night, when some matters of interest came up for dis- cussion. The president, R. J. Bushell, occupied the chair. The tariff was much discussed ani the general feeling was that vegetable growers were not receiving the pro- tection that they should receive, and a resolution was passed, asking that a provincial delegate be sent to Ot- tawa in reference to the matter. The financial ' report of the provin- cial bo~rd was read and comments made upon it. At the close of the meetin» the members of the association were the guests of the president at a banouet at the Collender hotel, where a most pleasant' time was spent bw all pre- sent. Among those who responded to toasts were : Dr. Edwards and E. R. Purdy, Cataragui: Richard Baiden, Portsmonth: President -R. J. Bushell, and S. M wton. The association, which was only or- canized last April, is in a most flourishing condition, and the mem- bers are confident that the organiza- tion will prove beneficial to' them. BOARD OF TRADE. A still larger market is look- ed for on Saturday. Turkev. which is, of course, the main thing at Christmas time is sell- ing at/12c. to 13c. per lb.; peese at 10c. to lle; chickens; Bc. to 70c., and ducks, 75c. to $1. There was a fairly good supply of pork, and the price ranwed from £9 to 810 per ewt., with beef at $4 to $6. Egus appeared rather scarce at 35c. a dozen, but there was a «ood. sup- ply of butter at 25e. per lb. TO-DAY"S POLICE COURT. Farmer Called Upon to Fine. A farmer was the only occupant of the prisoners' dock at, the police court this morning. He was accused of be- ing drunk, was found guilty and fin- ed $2 and costs. He paid up. The ruralist had an experience which might have proved rather serious for him. He was very much under the influence of liquor, and while driving home last night, over the Cataraqui bridge, he fell asleep, and the horses were allow- ed to take whatever course they cared for. The' animals made for one side of the bridge and had it not been for the railing, man, horse and cart would have been in the river.
