THE POLICE COURT. -- Cornelius McMahon Fined = For Drunkenness. It is a very difficult task for. Cop nelius McMahon to keds avay nom the police station. When on a spree he is almost sure to fall into the hands of the police. Yesterday he made a tour of the various hotels, and when night came he was in a helpless state. He had been warned by police officers during the day that he would be ta ken ta the lock-up unless he changed his ways, but this did not pause Cor nelivs to quit the drink. The only way he could sce was the way Jato bar-rooms, and when Constable Hughes saw him staggering along the street he took him in charge. Only a few weeks ago McMahon ap peared before the court and on that occasion he told the magistrate that he would leave the city if he were giv en the chance, The chance was given by the court, but still Cornelis re fused to go. He appears to love Kingston, but evidently loves whiskey just as much. "I am very sorry for the way things happened," said Me Mahon, when he appeared before the court - "I am sorry, 100," said the magis trate. "I'll just make it $5 and costs cor two months this time." McMahon pleaded to be given until Saturday to pay his fine, but the ma- gistrate refused to listen to him. When The Next Cold Starts. At the Week of Prayer Meeting-- "Love Thy Neighbor' Coming to Be Regarded as a Practical Doctrine. The . meeting, last evening, in, con- nection with the week of 'praydr, was held in Brock Street Mothodist church, and was presided over by the pastor, Dr. S. Eby. The attendance was good and mahy of the pastors of the city were present. Rev. J. G. Dunlop, of Jupan. a native Kingstonian, offered the opening prayer. ' Revs. C. EK. Manning and D. Laing also shared in the opening exercises. : The address of the evening, on "Na- tions and Their Rulers," was given by Rev. J. Charles Villiers. He said that society has its most primitive and simple representation in the family. But in the course of history, in the nature of events, men could not con- fine themselves to the family relation. Of necessity, the circle of human fel- lowship must be enlarged, and so, in course of time, there came to be the tribal, and later the national, and still later theyinternational relation. With the growth and development of the community life thee came ihto being a community spirit, and as the chmmum ed to increase in nue velop in intelligence, = of larger fraternity, the 1 sentiment. was also increased' and in- tensified until cach separate commun- ty or nation had a genius peculiarly its own. In the course of human progress sev. eral forms of civil government have been called into existonce, and have held 'sway. Tlhose several forms of government exist to-day. They may in general be grouped under three heads, but under whichever head a nation is now grouped it is safe to say that it has leanings, and leadings in various directions which 'bring it into -afliliation, more or léss close, with nations grouped under either of the two heads, For instance, the most absolute of monarchical govern- ments to-day is that of Russia. But Russia is not able, try she never so hard, to withstand the onward and upward march of other civilizations. Far away ad she is from the prin- ciples of true demoeracy which are the very life and genius of our British empire, she is much nearer to this to-day, than she ever was before, and possibly much nearer to stepping inté possession of their fullest. bless: ing than are some of her neighbors, who at present outdistance her in their politicat freedom. Under whatso- ever head of government, a 'nation may be grouped, it is wise that its rulers should remember that no na- tion can secure unto itseli immunity from the controlling hand of God. He, the Eternal, all obtrusive and univer sal Ruler never for a moment is with- out knowledge, or attention, or con trol over the world's affairs. He rides majestically and with sovereign pawer at the head of every regal procession. King of Kings and Lord of lords, and though communities large or small may assume an attitude of in difference to the principles of His Divine government, and act as though they lived in a chatmed circle, into which He cannot and will not enter, vot in their rebellion against Him, the truth remains, that He is nearer to them than breathing. closer than hands or feet, and from His overruling providence they cannot get away. From national we pass to interna- tional relations, and through these re- lations we are learning. as 'we have never learned before, the great lesson of the solidarity of the race. We are coming, in these days, to understand that each community and nation is most nearly related to every other community and nation. and that the New Testament doctrines "members one of another" is to recéivé no narrow interpretation in councils ofr the na tions. Instead of the family, as it was in feudal times, being the world. the world is now becoming one family; and that the family of God. The doc trine "Thons shalt love thy neighbor as thyself," is ceasing to be thoucht of as an unattainable ideal, and is coming to be regarded as a most vracfical doctrine which may be and ought to be_wmade instinct with life. Rov. D. Macallum. closed the meeting with the benediction. THE CITIZENS' LEAGUE. Will Press the Matter of Liquor License Reduction. The Citizens' League intends holding a meeting next week to decide upon what to demgnd of the city cduncil in the way of liquor license redaction in view of the fact that the people voted in favor of reduction. A pro manent member of the league suid that he favored the<_hotelmen's contention, that the church-own ed tavern should be one of the first to be refused further license. He, himself, was im favor of a gradual reduction, of sav four a vear for the next three vears. The city council reguives to notify the license commissioners by Murch Ist as to how many licenses should be granted for this year. The Citizens' League deputation will wait upon the council at its first regular meeting after inauguration, on Janu- ary 21st. On New Year's day Mr. and Mrs, Thomas J. Kelly, of Holloway, cele- brated fifty vears of havpy and pros- perous wedded life. At Napanee on January 1st, 1857, T. J. Kelly and Miss Rebecca McMurray were united in marriage. A mans wife should always he the same, especially to her husband, but if she is weak and nervous, and uses Carter's Iron Pills, she cannot be, for they make her "feel like a different per- son," so they all say, and their hus bands say so too.
