TO FIGHT GAG LAW. Boycott Every Member Support- Lishon, Jan. 10.-An intercsting struggle is on foot here between the government and the press which prom- ises exeiting developments. Recently the government brought forward a bill in' parliament regulating the rights and liberties of the press, which was generally condemned as heing of a re- actionary nature. The second act in the drama took place to-day, when the proprietors and litical directors of nearly all the mn papers held o meeting, at which, after a! lon, came to the following agreement : That any one aiding in any Way to carry "this bill into law shall be ig- nored in the public press and) regarded as non-existent. The significance of this step is that neither the persons nor the speeches of the members of the government will be mentioned in the Lisbon press, and only the speeches of the opposition will be reported. All the princi newspapers, both in Lisbon and the provinces, have ad- hered to the resolution. - The gotvern- ment's fall is ted if it does not withdraw the bill. ADOPTS SUBMARINES. Berlin, Jan. 10.-Laudwig Tessnow, the child murderer, who has béen on trial at Griefswald for the last ten days, has been sentenced to death, having been convicted on two separate tomas. The verdict condemns him to two fears' imprisonmént upon the third charge of murderous assault. Finally, he is to suffer loss of his po litical rights. The verdict attracts widespread at- tention, in view of the fact that nu- merous medical experts who testified at the trial were unanimous in the opinion that the murderer committed | his crimes in a state of degenerate moral irresponsibility. Public opinion commends the conviction, however, be- cause of the tendency in Germany to ascribe these hideous crimes, to insan- ity and to let the perpetrators escape with a mild sentence. A typical instance is reported, to day, from West Prussia, where an in human mother was let off with a year's imprisonment for nearly torturing to death her fourteen-year-old daughter. It was related during the triak-that the woman tied the 'child to a post in the stable and beat her naked body with a thorny dub so furiousty that the stable floor ran red with blood from the child's wounds. In order to make them heal quickly, as the wom- an told the child, she then saturated the wounds with vinegar and salt. On another occasion the mother beat the child with a pair of tongs, lacer- ating the flesh in the most horrible fashion. Yet again the mother drove wedges of wood into the child's ears The physicians found eighty separate wountls upon the poor girl's body. CHURCH UNION. Anglicans and Presbyterians Made Great Strides.
