Hamar Greenwood, M.P., Says Scene Just After the Earth- quake Was Simply Hellish-- The Blacks Were Very Heroic --Dead Are Carried Of in Barges. Holland Bay, Ja., Jan, 19.--~Two perceptible earthquake shocks were no- ticed, here, early yesterday morning, following which * telegraphic communi- cation was demoralized for three hours, when it. was again resumed, The break register indicates that five disturbances occurred off shore, about twenty-five miles from Jamaica. tis believed the oceanquakes ave responsi- ble for the reporied deepening of the water in Kingston harbor. Slight tremors continue off shore, The water supply in Kingston has not been ye- stored, and 200 deaths were reported there, yesterday morning. Ten bodies were recovered from the bay. It is be lieved that the victims were thrown from vessels by the earthquake, or else jumped into the water through fear. Great suffering exists among the poor because of lack of food and medi- cines. A deputation of fifty sufferers appealed to the governor, yesterday, for the systematic distribution of re- lief. The spokesnan says that many had died of neglect. He charged that those with money had been supplied with food and medicine. Two cargoes of food supplies arrived, yesterday morning, but were exhausted quickly and more are needed. Five more dead bodies and one living man were taken, yesterday, from a wrecked building. The six were imprisoned by the collapsing, and all but one, a Cana- dian named Truesdale, crushed to death. Truesdale was held a prisoner in the comer of a room for fiity hours. Fe wis kel insane when rescued, but will recover, Was Simply Hellish, Bondon, _ dss. 19.-An undated des spatch, from Holland Bay, Jamaica, to the Daily Mail, sent by Hamar Gfvenwood, .P., who is one of Sir Alfred Jones' party, visiting the is- land, contains the following: "Jesse Collings, Howell Davies und' myself were entering the Myrtle Bank hotel when the earth treémbld It then split into huge fissures, then cracked and left a hollowed street. Fires then started, and the scene became simply hellish." After relating known factsy Mr. Greenwood continues : "The dead' are taken in barges and buried behind palisades. A tribute to the bravery of the black waiters and the staff at the hotel. It was really heroic. Everyone is now recovering heart. The repair- ing of the tramway, railway and tele graphs is going on day and night. There is a shortage of money." The earthquake was restricted to Kingston and serious results are en- tirely local. The general prespecus, and especially for cotton, are splen did. The productiveness of the island is mot injured. Mr. Greenwood states that Senor Pers, the Cuban consul, was killed. The war office has posted a ~ listdi the killed and 'injured amon the troops at Kingston, but the list is admittedly incomplete und oxelusive of the disaster at the camp hospital, Jondia regiment were killed. Accord- ing to the casualties known at the time of sending the despatches, Major W. H. Hardyman and Lieut. J. La- mont were the only officers killed. Nine officers were injured.
