Goodwin, director of the School of Mining, says the Ontario goverment is id to grant suffi- ment money to extend the chemistry demands. In the chemical laboratore ies students have to work in relays. In the mining laboratory the oxpori- metal work is handicapped by small quarters and students have wnprovis- ed outdoor business to complete in- vestigations. The draughting rooms are filled with students and a Queen's building has to be horrowed as a demporary arrangement. The Loss is $40,000--The Eastern Section of the Business Part of the Town Was in Danger Those Who Suffered. Picton, Feb. 4.~The Jamieson block, be street, one of Picton's finest places, is in ruins; gutted a fire which started shortly after is Satudny, and which did about $40,000 damages. The building, 'a three storey structure, of brick, wus occupied by Cayley & Tomer, dry goous merchants, and A. J. Fralick & vo. Spigot furnishers. Just before closing his shop, H. 8. Wilcocks, in the adjoining store, 'de- tected the smell of smoke, and on in- vestigation he found the store of | Cayley & Tanner's to be on fire, The was at once sounded. Nearly an hour elapsed before the fire bri- gade got to work, and by then the fire had gained great headway. A bitter winter wind blow, strenuous 'fight for the volunteer brigade. Their energetic of- forts were badly hinderwd by the freee ing of all the apparatus. They were benumbed from the cold. A. KE. Wil son manager of the Bank of Montreal, opposite the burning building, furn- ished hot coffee to the fire fighters, For a time it looked as if the entire eastern scotion' of the business part of the town was doomed, but the fire made little headway against a fire- proof wall of the Wilcocks grocery, and' was well confibed to where it or- iginated. At 4 a.m., the fire was out and the firemen went home. At noon, Sunday, a second alarm was: rung in, as the building had again spring afire, but an hour's work put it en- tirely out. Cayley & Tanner is a new firm in Picton, having bought out Jamieson Bros, about a year ago. Some of the new spring goody had just arrived and was unpacked in the cellar. Mr. Tan- ner, when asked, said he could not as yet, estimate his loss. It will likely be about $15,000, with insurance. Fralick's will lose a 86,000 stock, cov- ered by insurance, and the building, owned by Jumieson Bros, was valued at about $15,000, and was insured. The stock in the two adjoining stores, Wilcocks' grocery and 0. B. Fralick's, gents' furnishings, was damaged con- siderably by smoke and water. None of the stock in the burned stores was saved, The fire was one of the most disastrous in the town's his- tory. While'witnessing the fire, J. H.
