Toronto, Feb. 14.--An abundance of medical testimony was heard by the commission investigating telephone matters, this morning, and some of the doctors called made scathing criticism of the work girl operators at the ex- changes of the Bell company had to do. It was generally agreed that five hours was sufficient for any young woman to work at the switch hoards in one day. The promised reliefs of twenty minutes, each morning and afternoon, under the eight hour sys- tem were declared to be insufficient. Dr. Sheard, medical health officer, characterized the raise in pay which the company had agreed to as "abso Iutely contemptible." In answer to questions as to the company taking back the gifls, Gen eral Manager McFarlane made the fol- lowing statement: "The operators have asked that we defer calline them in this week or until the commission gets through with them. 1 have no comments to make upon the case while it is in progress." This by-law will come before the city coun- cil, when the by-laws are considered.
