Hy Mervill of Syracuse, N. Y., president of 'the New York State Mothers' Ascembly, is in receipt of a letter irom President Roosewelt in which he defines the places of the\gth- er and mother in the home. The letter was written in response to ope ask- ing suggestions for the Council of Mothers recently held at Newburg, and the state convention to be held in the fall. The president says ; "For one of your topics how would it do to speak of the place of the father in the home? Now and then people forget that exactly as the mother must help the breadwinner by being a good housewife, so that fath- er in his turn if he is worth his salt must in every way back up the moth- er in helping to bring up the child- ren. "After all the prime duties are ele- mental and no amount of eultivation no amount of business force and sa- gacity will make the average man a good citizen unless that average mun 18 a good husband and father, and a faithful breadwinner, is tender and comsiderdte with his wife and both loving and wise (for to be loving and weak and foolish is utterly ruinous) in dealing with children, "I think it a crime for the woman to shirk her primary. duties, to shrink from being a good wife and mother. Of 'eourse the woman should have the same right as the men te train her mind, to better herself; and oceasion- ally a woman can, and ought to fol: low some special vocation in addition to (never in substitution for) her homo work. : "But just as the highest work for the normal man is work for his wife and children, so the highest work for the normal woman is the work of the home, where, Hoaven knows, the work is ample enough. : "But T also feel she can do the best outside interests and occupations in addition :and I most firmly believe that she cannot do her full duty by. her husband if she occupies a merely servile attitude toward him 'or sub- mits to ill-treatment, and that she is quite as bad a mother if weak and foolish as if hard and wnloving." ----iie Suit For Little Boy. A stylish model for a little boy's suit? which would be suitable for either linen or cloth material, is shown in the-mccompanying cut. The modél from which the sketch was taken was of dark. blue serge, with braid applied in military style, two widths of 'braid being "used, a flat braid of black mohair, three-quarters of an inch wide, and a narrower cord braid. The vest was of pique. ---------- That tired, languid feeling and dull ache is very dis, ble. Take two of Carter's Little Liver Pills be- fore retiring, and yop will 'find reliof.
