The plumbing store es- caped serious damage, as the result off the good work of the firemen. The total damage is placed at about $30, John MoKelvey, in speaking of the fire, this morning, stated that the building was insured for $4,000 in the Equity Insurance company. There is an insurance of $17,200 on stock. In the Royal, $4,000; Canada, $4,000; Hand-In-Hand, $4,700; Merchants, $2, ; Anglo-American, $1,000, and the remainder in other companies. The fire was discovered by Police Constable James Bateson, and the alarm was sent in at exgctly ten minutes to two' o'clock. The con- stable had just passed the store when he heard a smashing of glass. He ran back and noticed the building in flames, immediately sending in the alarm. The excessive heat in the building had caused the window to smash. Chief Elmer and his men made a quick- response, and in a very few minutes had several streams playing on the fire. The five appeared to have a good start when the fire fighters commenced their work, and it was a difficult task. People who witnessed the fire say that the firemen did re- markably well in keeping it from spreading. In the cellar there wers several barrels of ofl, and the firemen Sntetded in 'keeping these clear of the ames. It is stated that if the oil had caught fire there would have been great danger of the whole block be- coming a prey to the flames. It was feared that the plumbing store would catch fire, too, but as already stated, the firemen prevented this. Praise For Firemen. "You cannot say too much in praising the work of the firemen," said John McKelvey to a Whig repre- sentative. They worked splendidly and are deserving of great credit. Mr. McKelvey stated that the stock in the burned building would be valued -at $20,000. After the insur- ance had been considered, he thought that his loss would be about $5,000. "1 was in my office writing a letter at 8:30 o'clock in the evening," said Mr. McKelvey, "and there was no sign of a fire then in any part of the building." The fire, 1 think, started on the second storey, as the roof was burned off so quickly." The firemen had a hard nicht's work, and none of them left the scene until late this morning. The ruins of the fire presented an odd sight. In a big heap lay stoves, tins and other house furnishings, all sonked with water, mixed up with smouldering pieces of flooring. The rear portion of the store, where a large amount of stoves werd stored, escaped the flames, but was damaged to a very great extent by the water which found 188 'way in there. The office books were in the mafe, and these were, of . course, undam- aged. 'here was a large crowd at the fire shortly after it broke out. Word was sent to the members of the firm, and they were among the first to arrive on the scene. The firemen were still at work when citizens were on their way to work, this morning, and a large crowd congregated on the sidewalk pposite the store to watch the fire Mm at their work. Cause Of Conflagration. The fire is supposed to have been caused by electric wires. Mr. McKelvey states that! there was no fire in the building, and it is the general opin ion that this was the cause of we fire. It is believed that the fire had been burning for some time before it was noticed. The story told by Mrs. William Moberly, who lives up over one of the stores almost opposite the burned building. would go to show that this was the case. Mr, Moberly says that he was out to a meeting and did pot return home until after midnight. Some timo afterwards, he says, that hte wile looked out of the window, and that she noticed smoke coming over the McKelvey building, It was thought that the smoke was from one of the furnaces, and nothing more was though® of it for the time being. Some time later, Mrs, Moberly noticed more smoke and fearing that there was a fire she again aroused ber busbend. Both came downstairs, and thoy noticed Constable Bateson running to give the alarm. Nr. Moberly rendered what assis- tance he could, and has a great deal to. say in ise for the work of the firemen. he sayw. that they had seve ral streams on the Fro | 1a iNGwON, oveARIO, SARURDAY, WAROH Wh. As is usual at any fire, there was much discussion among the spectators about the fire and its origin, and everyone appeared to be well pleased with the way it was handled, Electric light men were on the scons this morning, looking after the wires which had become mixed up in the blaze, Notes About Fire. Chiof Elmer said that the fire bri- gade did the best it could. When it arrived at the scene of the fire, it was not long before six lines of hose were attached to hydrants at King, Wellington and Princess street cor pers. The streams from Princess street were brought through the rear of MeKelvy & Birch's store. The chief directed some of the men to flood the cellar 50 as to prevent the oil birrels there from exploding, There were a couple of slight explosions, but these didn't amount to much. Had the barrels all exploded, the re- sult. would have been serious for the n, The whole interior was ablaze when the brigade got to work, and, hence, all it could do was to confine the blaze within the four walle. McKelvey & Birch, both vet eran citizens, are as game as men twenty years younger. They are glad that they escaped so well. They are ready to start rebuilding at onee, and may add another storey to the store burned. They will get another store for their general business until the burned building is restored. John McKelvey was so pleased with the work of the firemen, that he wrote out a cheque for 850, to be divided among the firefighters. Constables Hughes and Mallinger were on duty at the fire to keep the crowd from going in dangerous places. They had a busy time. The fire was the cause of many Kingstonians vising a little earlier than usual this morning. : An old man arrived on the scene in great haste at eight o'clock. He wanted to get ns near as possible to the burned building to see what was "doing," and was greatly disappoint od when told to keep back. "What was the cause of the fire ¥" he asked "Never mind," replied a man who was assisting the firmwn. Just get out of the road, or you might get struck with a falling brick." The man look- od skywards, took the hint, and left. The front windows of the burned store were boarded up as soon as the firomen completed their work. The work of clearing up the debris will take considerable time. Letter To The Firemen. The following is @ copy of the letter forwarded to Chief Elmer this morn- ng: . To John Elmer, Chief Kingéton Fire Department : Dear Sir,--Enclosed we beg to hand von our cheque for 850, to be divided among the men upder your command, who did such excellent work in our un- fortunate fire this morning. We can- not praise you too highly for the way this fire was hid and kept with- in bounds, and your men for the her culean cforts made to save our prop: erty and the surroundings. Kindly ac- cept this cheque as a slight token of our appreciation for this work.--Yours very truly, MceKELVEY & BIRCH. An Outsider's View. A stronger who witnessed the ° Me- Kelvey & Birch fire this mgriing, and who is in a position to speak with knowledge of such matters, states that the stream thrown by the hose would be mare effective if the washers used at ths coupling joints were more suit- able, He picked up one of these wash- ers and brought it to the Whig, the better to explain his meaning. The in- side ciroumference of the washer, asserts, is too small, permitting it to protrude inside the hose by about quarter of an inch all round.
