The steamer Pierrepont failed to break her way through the ice to Wolfe Island to-day. Nome of the ears were overturned. BOARD OF EDUCATION TO Ask City For Grant of $39,881 This Year. This evening the board of education will meet to receive the finance com- mittee's report on the financidl re quirements for the year. The commit- tee recommends that $39,881 be asked from the city council, an increase of $2,058 over Inst year, which includes $900 for domestic science. The increase in the teachers' salaries thi® year will be $1,006.45. The item for repairs, Jr, in '$200 less than that of lastfyear. The property com- mittee ts that the school build ings are in good condition, and thet no large improvements will be requir ed this year. The sum of $300 is put in for two sots of new desks. In some class rooms there are double desks that are far too large for the pupils It is pr to replace those in two rooms with single desks suitable for the pupils. The fuel ficures show an increase of $242. The item for pupils' supplies, shows an increase of $100. The text books have bren in use four, years, aml a greater number than usunl will require replacing. The amount asked from the city this year for colleginte purposes, $9, 416, is $858 more than last year. This incregse is accounted for by an esti- mated reduction in fees, increase of teachers' salaries and loss of govern- ment grant on technical equipment. The increase in salaries totals $383. The grant for = technical instruction has dropped from $1,345 to 81.035, as a result of the equipment having heen paid by the government in the stipulated time for five years. EXAMINING BUILDINGS. In quite a number "some changes will have to be made, in the way of mak- ing the entrance doors swing out er. Stairways must be four feet in width, and some churches will have to comply with this new regulation. The engineer will make a complete report. and the owners and trustees of build ings will be notified of what they must do to comply with the by-law. Six months will be given for complyine.
