ATROCITIES LEAD TO THOROUGH MEASURES AGAINST RIOTERS. Pillagers Growing Bolder--Situa- tion in Roumania Not Yet Under Control--Conflicts Be- come More Sanguinary. Bucharest, Roumania, March 30. The efforts of the government to sup- press the revolt of the peasants have met with only partial The troops are now acting with Increased energy. A large number of rioters have been killed in the numerous conflicts ' with the soldiery, but as yet there is no dgn of permanent amelioration of the situation. On the contrary, the riot- crs appear to be becoming more bold and determined and the situation un- doubtedly is aggravated. As an indication of the gervous_ap- prehension existing even in the cap- ital, the new perfect of Bucharest, as a measure of precaution, ordered all shops in the city closed. This created the impression that the noters were approaching Bucharest. There was panic until it was learned that these fears were groundless. At Tirgovistes, in the Argesh dis trict, a band of peasants attempted, yesterday, fo raid an arsenal and pro cure a supply of . rifles and ammuni- SUCCOSS., tion. Upon being repulsed, the riot ers set fire to many houses in the town. At Viaschka a band of peasants was summoned to disperse, refused to do so and opened fire the troops, whereupon the latter fired three shots at them from a field gun, killing sev enty men and wounding many more. According to an unconfirmed version of the encounter, 200 of the peasants were killed. A squadron of Hussars sent to Bra- bova came in conflict with a band of peasants and it is reported that Gfty of the latter were killed. A train run: ning between Bucharest and Komona was stopped by rioters and looted. There is a slight improvement in the situation at Jassy. The strdts of the city are empty and the shops still shut. The peasants apparently are overawed by the concentration of troops. A serious encounter is reported to have taken place at the Village of Papanhabestic in which many peasants were killed or wonnded. The bombardment of the three vil lages in the Vlaschka district in 'which rivters had taken refuge, undoubtedly resiilted in' a very large casualty list, but the exact numbers cannot be learned. It known, however, that several hundred peasants wire arrested e. There have been sa inary encoun ters in the distriet of Dolj, but details are lacki The peasants there are very ri places the number killed and wounded in encoun ng rumor ters with the troops at several - hun dred. The authorities are now beginning to use artillery bombard the villages where the rioters take refuge. The peasants committed terrible atrocities in the Buzeo district, and the troops seat. thither had orders to suppress the disturbances at any price. : Jt is still impossible to give even an of the number ate approximate esti killed or wounded since the beginning of the disorders, but there is good reason to believe that the reports have not been exaggerated and that when the totals finally are learned they will he greater than is now sup- posed. Eleven army officers have been killed or wounded The newspapers print further stories of the fierce fighting. It is stated that every rebel town and village is being bombarded into ruins. One hundred and forty houses, at Vieru, have been demolished and wore than 300 per sons were killed. Two neighboring villages were razed and all their in habitants killed.
