Way back about the beginning of the fall, a young man about nineteen years of age, hailing from Dundee Scotland, arrived in Canada and uck Montreal. His name was James Sellers, and he was highly recom- mended. More than that, he, was well educated and had a thoroughly re- spectable appearance. He looked around for a situation and finally found one as clerk with a Mr. David- son, druggist, of Westmount. Those who eame into the store liked his manner, his general air and his way with his employer, and he was promoted 16 a position of trust. Now, Mr. Davidson has an arrangement with the Canadian Express company, whereby he money orders, and hangs a tale. About three weeks ngo young Sellers failed to re- port for work. Enquiries at his lodging house disclosed that he had disappeared, and at once Mr. David- son made an examination of the books. The result was that he found the money order book, containing twenty-one blank orders, had disap- peared. As cach of these could - be tilled out for $30, the loss might ap- proximate £1,050. New York, April 8 The Herald dor- respondent at Philadelphia has sent the following despatch : The climax of interest at to-day's session of the Am- erican Oviental Solietv was reached when Prof. Hopking, of Yale, read his paper on "The Spiff Kiss in Ancient India." Prof. Hopkins traced the history of the kiss from its birth, and proved that the earliest peoples and earliest times knew it not. That there might be no mistake he labelled the kiss of to-day, '"'the genuine kiss" and "the perfect kiss." The genuine kiss, Prof Hopkins said, was invented by & woman. Its de- scription is given in the Epic of An- cient India, which treats of the sci ence of love. ""She laid her mouth to my mouth, recites the poet, "and made a noise which gave me pleasure." With that discovery grew the fash ion which has since known no abate: ment, and observers even say the fash- ion is spreading. Additions to the Epic in later years described varia- tions in the natural kiss, all based upon that given hy the of the first narrator. "The early peoples." declared Prof. Hopkins, "knew nothing of the kiss in any form. Had they known of it they would have told something of it in the mass of records that has come down to us."
