This situation has arisen from no antipathy toward individuals, but from the displeasure of Americans at" the manner in which they have been entertained at the clubs of the British metropolis, although ostensibly ad- mitted to all the privileges. They say that they get only to a small portion of "a London club house, and some of them do not eves progress to the strangers' room. They may be escorted to.some small apartment set apart for foreigners at the top of the building, or they may be permitted to linger for a while in a corridor. When the Englishman en- tertains the American it is maintain ed that he is as likely as not te take him to some semi-proprietary club. AN OFFER. To the Weak and Weary Women of Kingston. There are hundreds of women in this vicinity who are dragging themselves through life in pain and misery, with- out vitality, strength or -health," said our local druggist, George W. Ma- hood. "They get no happiness out of life and are just in a condition to be attacked by alwost any disease. They need a vitality-making and strength- creating tonic. 3 "Now, at our expense, we want to ask every such woman to try our cod liver preparation, Vinol, which con- tains beside tonic iron, the medicinal elements of cod liver oil, but no oil or grease. It is delicious to take, creates a healthy appetite, makes pure, rich red blood, and gives sirougth und vig- or to every organ of the ly better than any medicine we have ever sold in our store, and when a woman is in this condition it makes life worth living. ' "i we say 'at our expense' we mean that if the medicine you buy from .us and pay for does not benefit you, we will refund every cent of it cheerfully, and thus you try it at our expemse." G. W. Mahood, druggist. GHOST PUMPS WATER. Industrious Spirit Loosé at Piqua, Ohio. New York, April 8.--The Herald has received the following despatch from Piqua, Ohio: 'Ghostly manifestations in the Heeter home, three miles east of Sonora, in Preble county, which are attested to by residents of the neighborhood, have drawn hundreds of venturesome persons to the home in the last two days seeking to pene trate the mystery. Not only by rappings in the house does the spirit give evidence of its pres: nice, it is declared, but outin the yard the pump handle moves up and down, impelled by some invisible force, while the water flows freely. Sounds of thumping are heard, kettles rise from the stove, float about in the air and then return to their places. By a series of rappings, a certain number of raps carresponding to each letter of "the alphabet, the alleged ghost has made it known that it is the spirit of Martha Donald, now dead, who once lived in the house. MAY BE CHEAPER BEER. Lower Prices May Rule With Open- ing of Larger Season. Montreal, April 6.--~The situation "in the beer trade is understood to be growing interesting. A meeting of the brewery representatives was held yes terday, the outcome of which, while not officially announced, is said te threaten a struggle, in which prices may come down to as low 'as $4 or a barrel. Those who can speak with authority maintain silence, but there reams to be no doubt that lower, rates will be the rule with the opening of the lager season Night"Riders In Kentucky Hopkinsville, Ky., April 8.--The re- sumption of wholesale plant destruc- tion through the dark tobacco district of Kentucky and Tennessee by night raiders has again thrown that section into a state of excitement. The night raiders, acting always under cover of the darkness and in a most stealthy manner, have recently ruined dozens of plant-beds belonging to those farm- ers who have refused to join the Planters' Protective Association, while in some instances plant-beds belong- ing to association' members have dlso bern devastated. Last year the des- truction of plant-beds was accom- plished by 'scraping the beds with hoes, but this time the marauders used grass seed and salt to accompiish their end. Grass seed germinates much or cattle that graze upon it drunk. This means nourishment and strength for the whole body. Back-aches and dragging pains are forgotten. Irregularities disappear, vi tal energy is restored, and happy, ro bust health is once more established Dr. Hamilton's Pills for woman's ills is the slogan of thousands to-day. Enormous benefit in many ways fol low their use, and no woman or girl can use medicine that will do their gen eral health more good. For the sake of your Kidneys, for the sake of your liver, for the advancement of your general well-being, you can't improve on Dr. Hamilton's Pills, 25. per box, or five for $1, at all dealers, in yellow boxes. MGR. MONTAGNINT'S PAPERS. Affair Has Turned Into a Public Scandal Paris, April 6.--The conditions re- vealed by portions of the Montagnini documents occupy a most conspicuous place in public discussion. Their pub- ication has turned the affairs of the this Easter week into a Since Saturday, when the publication began, interest, in stead of waning, has widened. No- body is wholly pleased by the pub lication of the documents. The du- bious benefit which some friends of the church professed to expect from priority of © publication in a church organ has been dissipated, to the widespread realization of the pettiness of Nor Montagnini's| observations, even among those who hold that his papers do not show. anything repre hensible in the wvatican's activity in French affairs. On the other hand, the government's friends are not glecful because the government's plans as to the publica tion of the documerits have been up set. The church papers, while pro fessing to fear no harm to the church, adopt: an apologetic tone, while others not belonging to the opposition won- der what remains unknown which may have lead Premier Clemenceau into writing two letters of denial, already. One fact, recognizdd by all, is that the publication has revealed what was known, but it is not denied that the whole situation is rocking into intri gue. There is no use of longer blink- ing at the fact that these impressions have gone out, and will not down, no matter whether Mgr Momtagnini"s statements are true or not. There are plenty of denials his statements, but no side has vet dented the au- thenticity of the documents on which the newspapers have drawn for their publications. church in public scandal. of SWINBURNE'S BIRTHDAY. The Poet is Engaged on a New Tragedy London, April 6. Lord Lister, the oclebrated surgeon, and Algernon Charles Swinburne, the poet, yester ay, oclebrated, respectively, their eighticth and seventieth birthdays, in excellent health. Congratulations poured in on the former from surgeons in America and every other part of the world, while literatteurs at home and abroad felicitated the poet, Incidentally the interesting announce ment was made that Swinburne is en gaged on a mew tragedy, the subject being "Caesar Borgia." Senator Penrose's Denial. Philadelphia, April 6.--United States Senator Penrose had this to say about the published report that he told at a dinner the story of a "rich men's con spiracy" to prevent the selection of President Roosevelt's choice of a sue or to him : Ri abeolutely an untruth. I have never said any such thing. It is all untrue. I have always been a sup- sorter of and believer in President Be ve administration and all its policies." The senator was asked : "Have you ever heard of a $5,000,000 fund to pre- vent President Roosevelt naming his successor 7" "No, absolutely net." ---- Better Steel Rails Demanded. New York, April 8.--While questions connected with car storage and me- thods designed to prevent a recur rence of the deplorable conditions pre vailing during the year, will take up considerable time at the meeting of American Railway Association in Chi- cago on April 24h; it is quite certain that steel rails and their manulacture will. demand much attention, in econ- sideration of the experience railroads have been having.in various parts of the country, especially during the past winter. Broken rails, | cracked rails, rails with hidden flaws that do not become known umtil they have waused an accident, are numerous. German-American Marriage.
