The jury had then been deliberating on a ver- dict for more than thirty hours, a much longer period than has been ne- cessary in most of the other famous criminal' trials of recent yeas. As the hours flew by without any sign from the jury all sorts of rumors spread - through the criminal court building about conditions in the jury oy Upori one point they all ag=ead; that a bitter fight was on between the jurymen over Thaw's guilt, and that the outcome would be largely depen- dent upon the endurance of the con- tending' factions. The rumor most generally heard and mest commonly credited, whether it had any foundation or net, was that ¢ither one or twp jarors were holding out against a verdict of © guilty of murder in the first degree or guilty of manslaughter, = -- No Decision Yet. New York, April 12.--Justice Fitz- gerald reached the court house, at 10.31 am. It was persistently report- el, this morning that the 7 haw jury is divided nine to three. Some said that the nine were for conviction of manslaughter and three for acquittal, while others declare the three were for conviction and the nine for avquittal, because of insanity. One thing is cer tain the jury is struggling to reach a verdict. The appearances of the jurymen when they went to break- fast; this morning, indicated that they had been through a long and a bitter fight, the strain of which was telling upon them. It is said that the states attorneys have practically giv- en up hope of securing a verdict of the first degree, but that Jerome ex pects the jury to deal some sort of punishment to the prisoner if only to subject his exaggerated ego. Calls Speech Cheap Poetry. London, April 12. --Commenting on the Thaw trial at Néw York, the Ev- ening Standard ridicules the 'oratory of Messrs. Delmas and Jerome as be ing "flapdoodle," says it considers Mr. Delmas to be the worse sinner in this respect, and adds it "seemed as if a minor poet had been let logse up- on the court." The paper inquires if it is impossible that a jury of practical experienced men could be influenced by such emp- ty rhetoric," and says: "Oratory of such a kind is ineon- ceivable in an English court. It would disgust the judge and jury alike, and provoke a bitter . remonstrance even from the prisoner at the bar." Still Out. New York, April 12 Justice Fits led to go ott for luncheon served in the consultation room.
